Nottingham Forest's quiet deadline day has left one transfer question mark hanging over Nuno
Nottingham Forest went into the winter transfer window mindful of doing too much by way of tinkering, so it was no surprise deadline day passed relatively quietly.
Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo always insisted he had a good squad already in place. The Portuguese was wary of doing anything to upset the momentum or disrupt the team spirit the Reds have built up.
Up front was really the only area of the pitch perhaps in need of attention before the transfer cut-off. But Forest have maintained their considered approach from the summer and have opted not to spend for the sake of it.
The dressing room Nuno has now will be the one to carry the Reds through for the remainder of the campaign as they target European football. Below, we assess the squad’s strength in depth.
Goalkeepers
Last month, Forest re-signed Wayne Hennessey on a short-term contract until the end of the season. Nuno described him as a “good person” to have around the place.
At the time, Nuno said there was a question mark over whether Hennessey would be included when the revised 25-man squad list is submitted. Either way, he will be a key part of the goalkeepers’ union Trentside.
Matz Sels has been in superb form this term and is currently top of the pile for clean-sheets in the Premier League with 10 to his name. Summer signing Carlos Miguel hasn’t had too many opportunities to show what he can do but appears to be a capable deputy and will start every FA Cup game for as long as the Reds’ run in the competition continues.
Goalkeepers: Matz Sels, Carlos Miguel, Wayne Hennessey.
Centre-backs
Andrew Omobamidele joined Strasbourg on loan last month in the search for regular game time. With Nuno placing an emphasis on being tight at the back, the Reds have some very strong options in this department and the Irishman was down the pecking order.
Nikola Milenkovic has been one of the signings of the season, such is the difference he has made since arriving in the summer. The Serbian has also helped Murillo to kick on, and together they have been a formidable partnership.
Nevertheless, Nuno opted to bring in Morato and go with a back three for Saturday’s 7-0 thumping of Brighton and Hove Albion. It worked well and it will be interesting to see whether Forest stick with the system going forwards.
Whether it be from off the bench or from the start, Morato has been excellent so far this term. Willy Boly is also on hand as another option and to provide an experienced head in the dressing room.
Reading youngster Tyler Bindon was a deadline day signing for the Reds. The 20-year-old is viewed as a bright prospect and was immediately loaned back to the Royals for the remainder of the season.
Centre-backs: Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic, Morato, Willy Boly.
Full-backs
Neco Williams and Ola Aina have firmly pinned down their places in the starting XI of late. The fact both can play on either flank adds an extra layer of versatility and cover to the squad.
Williams’ impressive form of late has kept on-loan Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno on the bench. The Spaniard had done well earlier in the season but now finds himself having to be patient in waiting for his chance.
Forest also have Harry Toffolo as a left-back option. The former Huddersfield Town man could also be called upon to operate on the left of a back three, if needed, as he has taken on that role before.
Teenager Eric da Silva Moreira is also flexible. He might not see too much game time between now and May but will benefit from being around the squad and getting the odd opportunity. He has caught the eye in his handful of appearances so far. As well as being able to play at right-back and right wing-back, he can also play as a winger.
Full-backs: Neco Williams, Ola Aina, Alex Moreno, Harry Toffolo, Eric da Silva Moreira.
Midfielders
So well stocked are the Reds in the centre of the pitch, the return of James Ward-Prowse to parent club West Ham United did not come as too much of a surprise. He would likely have found minutes even harder to come by with Danilo and Ibrahim Sangare back in the mix.
Danilo and Sangare started the season as first-choice pairing before injury intervened. Nuno has quite the headache when it comes to deciding who gets the nod now.
Elliot Anderson is competing with Milenkovic for the signing of the season accolade. Nicolas Dominguez has put in some terrific performances and few players can get stuck in like Ryan Yates can. Each midfielder has something different to offer.
Midfielders: Ryan Yates, Danilo, Nicolas Dominguez, Ibrahim Sangare, Elliot Anderson.
Attackers/wingers
Back in the summer, Nuno stressed bringing in wingers was a priority. Jota Silva and Ramon Sosa duly arrived to provide competition and cover for Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga.
Jota and Sosa are still finding their feet somewhat when it comes to adapting to English football. Scoring his first Premier League goal last weekend should act as a confidence boost for the former.

That the Reds romped to such an impressive win without the injured Hudson-Odoi was encouraging, with Nuno’s formation change working a treat. The ex-Chelsea man has been pictured joining in with his teammates during their week-long training camp in Dubai so should be available again soon, which will be a big positive.
Throughout the squad, Forest have several players who can operate in a number of different roles. Anderson and Dominguez can step in out wide, as can Morgan Gibbs-White. Anderson and Jota can take on Gibbs-White’s No.10 spot, if needed. Gibbs-White is capable of taking up a deeper role. Jota can play as a striker. Nuno appreciates such versatility, and he can also change formation when required.
Attackers/wingers: Morgan Gibbs-White, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga, Jota Silva, Ramon Sosa.
Strikers
If there is one area where there is a question mark over the Reds’ strength in depth, it is up front. Chris Wood has been sensational so far this term and Forest will be keeping everything crossed he stays injury free. Nuno recently insisted Taiwo Awoniyi can have a key role to play but the Nigeria international still has work to do to get back to his best.
Jota and Elanga could step in, if required, but there will be some fans concerned about a shortage of cover. Forest have made a point of doing careful and considered business in the last two windows, though, and have been reluctant to spend for the sake of it. Nuno stressed several times that the winter window was a tough one to do business in, especially as several teams were on the lookout for forwards.
Strikers: Chris Wood, Taiwo Awoniyi.
