Nuri Sahin sacked by Borussia Dortmund as Champions League defeat proves final straw
Nuri Sahin has been sacked by Borussia Dortmund after just seven months in charge.
The Turkish boss - who played more than 250 games for the club - replaced Edin Terzic in the hotseat back in June, just weeks after the heartbreaking defeat Champions League Final defeat to Real Madrid. But Dortmund chiefs have decided to wield the axe in the wake of Tuesday night's 2-1 loss away to Bologna - their fourth consecutive defeat.
BVB's sports director Lars Ricken announced: "We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long-term collaboration and until the end we had hoped that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together. After four defeats in a row, due to only one win in the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation. This decision hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the game in Bologna."

Sahin added: "Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund's sporting ambitions this season. I wish this special club all the best."
It's been a miserable season for Dortmund, who sit 10th in the Bundesliga - a whopping 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich. And Sahin's fate was sealed when Dortmund threw away an early lead in Italy to give Lewis Ferguson's Bologna their first victory in the competition. That condemned Dortmund to back-to-back Champions League defeats for the first time since November 2021 and the search now begins for a new manager. Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is one of a number of high-profile names who have already been linked with the role.
