Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner wants Romain Esse to 'keep his identity' as he makes the jump to Premier League football.

The 19-year-old joined the Eagles last week for a fee in the region of £14.5m from their local rivals Millwall, penning a deal until 2031.

Stepping up from the Championship, the left-footed winger is expected to add flair and directness to the Palace side.

Assessing Esse’s first week in training, Glasner affirmed that the Lambeth-born attacker is making a strong transition to the intensity of top-flight training while urging him to keep the same cutting edge he showed at Millwall.

“Romain is a good guy,” Glasner shared. “Of course, he has to get used to the intensity. Not today [Friday], but the previous two days were very intense – the players worked very hard.

“Although he has not had much time, he seems to be adjusting quickly, which gives us a good feeling.

“Now it is about working with him and making sure he is open-minded and taking all the information, but also making sure he keeps his creativity and way of playing.

“We want him to be the Romain Esse he was at Millwall because that is why we signed him. Don’t lose your identity, keep your identity and get integrated into the way we play.

“We are fully confident in his skills and talent, otherwise we would not sign him. It is about giving him time.

“I remember my first words here were ‘I am no magician’ and he is no artist. It takes time and we will give him the time to adjust to our system and the Premier League.

“If you think back to the last three or four years, Michael Olise did not start the first games nor score many goals in his first six to nine months. It was the same with Eberechi Eze.”

“We will work with him in training, try to help him and then he will get his minutes and become known to the Premier League – this is just a natural cycle.”

“It is important to be patient with him and give him time. We have many good options in our attack and he is one more great option.

“He is left-footed, so we have Justin Devenny, Jeffrey Schlupp and Romain, but they are all a little bit different. He gives us another option to have an impact on a game. It is good to have him here.”

Glasner confirmed that Esse will be named in the squad to face Brentford on Sunday, but it remains to be seen whether he will be handed his Palace debut.

"He will be in the squad, definitely. I cannot say if he will play or how long he will play because it will depend on how the game is going.”
