Arsenal's transfer deadline day revolves around two men. 10 years apart and at opposite ends of the readiness spectrum. Ollie Watkins and Mathys Tel.

The former, 29, has been a goal-getting Premier League contributor for five years. The latter, 19, has hardly played for Bayern Munich this season but is still rated as one of the best prospects to come out of France in recent times.

One would be a potential loan for just over four months with no certainty of a permanent move in the summer. The other would be a much more expensive commitment for over £60million.

There are benefits to both but also drawbacks, especially for what Mikel Arteta wants and needs at Arsenal. Given the reason that the club are so in need of new additions in attack, namely the injuries to Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus, availability is key.

Arsenal are still competing for three competitions right now. That could be two by the end of the week as they play Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. Already 2-0 down from last month's defeat, there is a mountain to climb.

In the Premier League, there is a gap to Liverpool that also needs overcoming. It is one that seems insurmountable currently, but Everton's resurgence ahead of the rescheduled Merseyside derby could change that. Arsenal are doing everything in their control to keep things lively and pressurised.

Deals for Tel or Watkins would be to strengthen Arsenal's position in regards to this and also going far in Europe. The Carabao Cup is also important as it represents the most likely chance of silverware this season.

To sign Tel or Watkins but then not have them ready to play would be a serious blow. Fortunately, due to UEFA rules, they are free to be added to the squad later this week. The same is true for the Premier League and League Cup.

Despite Villa having played in the Carabao Cup, Watkins did not. He was unused in the third and fourth round, left out of Unai Emery's squad entirely for a win over Wycombe and then the eventual defeat to Crystal Palace.

This means, unlike backup goalkeeper Neto, Watkins would not be cup-tied if he were to move. For Arsenal, who travel to St James' Park on Wednesday night, this is a massive boost.

Playing Watkins is the easy part. Signing him is the much harder bit. Overturning the deficit with or without him is also a tough ask.
