Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson is determined to keep progressing in the Vertu Trophy – even if the league is the priority.

The Red Dragons currently sit third in the table, despite not playing at the weekend, as they aim to build on back-to-back promotions from the National League.

Wrexham booked their place in the quarter-final with a 4-1 win against Port Vale last Tuesday. That had initially been postponed due to the weather conditions.

“Obviously, the league is the priority like every manager will say,” Parkinson said after the result at Vale Park.

“But we go into each game looking to perform at our best, picking the team we feel is right. We want to keep progressing.

“Now we have got a home game against Bolton, which is good because we haven’t got a weekend fixture.

“We will go into that game, think long and hard about the team selection and try to progress one more step.”

Academy graduate Harry Ashfield netted his first senior goal against the Valiants and could be involved again against Bolton.

"Harry is a really good player and that performance didn't surprise us at all," Parkinson insisted. "Not just the goal but his all-round game was really good.

"He is a class player, he showed it in pre-season and shows it everyday in training. He is a humble young man and he's a credit to his family."

"It gives me some great options for Tuesday," the manager added. "We have got to pick the team for Bolton and Harry is up there. He stepped in against Port Vale and he can't do much more.

"We will pick the team with obviously one eye on Northampton, that is understandable as well, but we will be picking a strong team."
