I was part of Liverpool team that thrashed Forest in greatest ever match - but I'd take 1-0 tonight

Federico Chiesa has hardly had any game-time since joining Liverpool so Accrington was an important game for him. It wasn’t a league game, a cup game against lower-league opposition so he can use it to build up.

And he looked likely. He had a couple of shots blocked, hit the post and then scored a really good goal. We don’t know what’s gone on with him in the past. He’s not been involved and we’ve heard stuff about his fitness or whatever.

But he came on and made an impact, it shows you that he is well-liked in that squad, given how the players reacted after he scored. They were all around him, celebrating with him, which is always nice to see.

The fans gave him a massive cheer too. Let’s hope he can settle down now and push on. Get back to the player he was three or four years ago. He is a super talent so let’s just hope he can take those next steps.

Harvey has to stay

I think Harvey Elliott’s best position is when he comes on and links up with Mo Salah. He can go outside, in behind him on that right-side position - almost a half-winger on right midfield.

It’s been hard for Harvey, especially his position. He’s not a winger in my opinion, though he could become one in years to come. But for now, he’s an attacking midfielder and you need to find a way to fit him in.

He needs games. He finished last season really strongly under Jurgen Klopp when he was playing regularly. He was alright at the weekend, but he does need games. He’s lacking a bit of sharpness at the moment, that’s all.

He’s been linked with a move away, but Liverpool can’t let him go. Be it on loan or permanently, they can’t let him go. Liverpool can’t let anyone go at the moment.

If anything, they need to buy an insurance policy. We cannot afford to leave any gaps. If we want to win the league, you have got to be covered in every position.

We’ve got a lot of cup games coming up. Plymouth, where he’ll play. Perhaps Tottenham at home, maybe the Carabao Cup final if they turn it around and get through. There are games in Europe too coming up where we’ll need him so he will get more game-time.

All the fringe players will get game-time between now and the run-in and they need to get their sharpness in that game-time, because they might be needed more in the run-in if someone gets injured. You never know.

So it’s really important to keep Harvey Elliott and to keep the squad together. I wouldn’t let anyone go, personally.

Fighting Forest

It would be nice to get Forest back on Tuesday night if we can, but right now, that home defeat in September is irrelevant. We have got to play much better than we have of late.

We’ve slipped a bit since beating West Ham. We’re not playing to our standards, but we have to on Tuesday.

When chances come, the forwards have to take them. We can’t squander chances, but especially not away at Forest when the stakes are so high and the atmosphere will be electric.

The first goal in most games is crucial, but even more so in this one. They are so good defensively, so it will be very big. Our forwards have got to be on the ball, whoever Arne Slot plays.

I imagine it will be Salah, Diaz and Gakpo who start the game, given that he rested them at the weekend, and they’ve got to be on the ball. When a chance falls to you, get it in the back of the net.

As Bob Paisley famously said, “stick it in the net and we’ll discuss your options afterwards!” If they do that, we’ll win the game. If we play well and the lads are on-form upfront, we’ll win the game. It’s as easy as that.

I remember when we beat Nottingham Forest 5-0 back in 1988, they were probably the second-best team in the league that year. People said our performance was one of the best performances they had ever seen.

The great Sir Tom Finney said he had never seen a performance like it in his entire lifetime. He said, 'That was one of the finest exhibitions of football I've seen!' That put it into context at the time but we beat the side that were second or third in the league 5-0. And it could have been 10!

It was an unbelievable performance and I managed to get a couple of goals that night. When people ask me about performances, that one is right up there as one of the very best team performances I was ever part of as a player.

If we beat Forest now, it would send out a statement to the rest of the league. But never mind another 5-0, I’d happily take 1-0 this time! That would do me just fine.
