Patrick Dorgu to Man United transfer could see Ruben Amorim repeat Erik ten Hag mistake
Manchester United could be turning to Serie A again in their latest rebuild.
Ruben Amorim's team desperately need reinforcements as they look to rescue an increasingly disastrous season. Good performances against Liverpool and Arsenal aside, it has become abundantly clear that many in the current Reds squad are not suited to Amorim's 3-4-3 system.
Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu has been most-heavily linked in recent days with the Reds in talks to sign the left wing-back. It's a position that no other player at Old Trafford has looked comfortable in and will be vital if Amorim is able to succeed at M16

But there should be some concerns. United's recent transfer record with signings from Serie A has been patchy at best.
Joshua Zirkzee has been well below the standards expected since arriving from Bologna last summer. The Dutch striker has scored just four goals since joining and has even been linked with a shock return to Italy after just six months at Old Trafford - even though that seems unlikely at the moment.
Another striker signed from Italy's top tier, Rasmus Hojlund, has also been placed under the microscope. The 21-year-old, signed from Atalanta two summers ago, has plenty of potential, but the verdict is still very much out with several patchy performances under Amorim.
Sofyan Amrabat was another player who arrived with much fanfare but was largely ineffective during his season-long loan spell from Florentina. The Moroccon redeemed himself in some people's eyes with his superb performance in the FA Cup final win, but he struggled for much of 2023/24.
Those three signings did contribute, although not exclusively, to the sacking of Amorim's predecessor, Erik ten Hag. Many will point to the list of players signed from Ten Hag's native Netherlands, but those who joined from Italy were also culpable to Ten Hag's demise.
Further back, it could be argued that Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Manchester from Juventus was a mistake which cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dearly. United were building a young and dynamic team, but Ronaldo's arrival stunted their progress, even if he was the consistent goalscorer which Amorim's team currently need.
Ten Hag looked to Serie A as he looked to solve that problem position, with Amorim now doing the same in his bid to resolve the club's issues at left-back. Whether Dorgu would follow a similar pattern remains to be seen.
However, the warning signs are difficult for Amorim and Ineos to ignore.
