Versatile wing-back Patrick Dorgu could become Ruben Amorim's first signing by the end of the January transfer window, signalling the start of Manchester United's rebuild under the new manager - but some United fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section might have preferred to see an old face return.

Dorgu is considered as one of Serie A's most promising defenders, making 57 appearances for Lecce and becoming a Danish international. A £31.4 million fee has reportedly been agreed, and his signature would give Amorim a new option on the left hand side, where Diogo Dalot has been playing and where Luke Shaw may slot in when he returns from injury.

Another young option that Manchester United might have chased is bringing academy graduate Alvaro Fernandez back to the club using a buyback option. Thought to be £15 million, the attack-minded, left-sided wing-back has been performing well at new club Benfica, making his mark most recently with an assist in their back-and-forth 5-4 thriller with Barcelona in the Champions League.

Fernandez has indicated that he would like to finish the season at Benfica, saying: "In truth, we never know, but I have a long-term contract here at Benfica, I'm happy."

Fans are weighing up the options open to United. Commenter Deanodo says: "Personally I’d have got Fernandez back for 15 million, and had another 15 mil to spend or bank.”

Reader Garth123 writes: “Lets give Dorgu a chance. He hasn't kicked a ball yet and I see many negative articles. The only negative I have is the transfer fee. 30m Euros plus 5 in add ons seems a little excessive for me when Alvaro Fernandez could have been brought back for £15m due to the buyback clause, but for some reason he was the B target. That just seems strange to me unless I am missing something.”

Muboy says: “I assume that Amass has been judged not good enough currently for the first team ? And that Alvaro Fernandes has also been judged not good enough? And that Dorgu is judged to be significantly better than either of those players, and the very best available to do the job Amorim wants done?

"The United recruitment department desperately need a 'win' so let's hope this choice provides it. Hopefully, Amorim is fully aware and has fully backed the choice.”

Chickenoriental thinks that a suitable option already exists at the club: “Buying Alvaro back would be a total embarrassment for the club, plus he's not setting the world alight as some media outlets would like you to believe. The season is a write-off anyway, so give Amass experience with little pressure.”

OAM1994 writes: “Man Utd pursuing Dorgu makes no sense and is stupid. Lecce want 40 million euros for a LB/LWB who is not playing European football, and who's team is fighting relegation in Serie A. Whereas Fernandez is playing Champions league Football and Benfica are second in the Portuguese league. Add in the fact that Utd have a buy back option. Just exercise the buyback option, they are a similar age.”
