Patrick Mahomes has heard the slander. He's seen the lies. He's witnessed all the wrong people taking credit for his success and now he's finally standing up for himself.

Nope, we're not talking about the Kansas City Chiefs' inane referee conspiracy. This is, somehow, much dumber than that.

In one of the most easily verifiable lies imaginable, Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville has taken credit for starting the recruitment process of Mahomes to Texas Tech.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump erroneously gave Tuberville credit for coaching Mahomes with the Red Raiders despite the fact Tuberville ditched Texas Tech two years before Mahomes' arrival to become head coach at Cincinnati. Later on, in an interview with Megyn Kelly, the host also gave Tuberville credit for coaching Mahomes. The senator, last seen getting mocked by Tim Walz, corrected Kelly in explaining he did not coach Mahomes, but did try to take credit for recruiting him.

Tuberville then posted the video clip on his social media account. There's just one problem: Mahomes said Tuberville never recruited him. The quarterback can't even remember if he's even met Tuberville.

Now, it's not rare for coaches to begin recruiting players years before they have to make a college decision, but it's hard to think of any coaches who have recruited a player to a school they are no longer employed by — especially a coach who ditched recruits during a dinner to take the Cincy job — which you would have to believe is what Tuberville did in order to take credit for Mahomes.

But Texas Tech under Tuberville never offered Mahomes a scholarship nor invited him to visit campus. The senator just refuses to let the facts get in the way of a good story.
