Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has admitted he would offended if the Reds decide to sell Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window but he would understand if Alejandro Garnacho left.

Both Mainoo and Garnacho have been linked with the exit door this winter as the Reds have revoked their untouchable status at the club. Mainoo is thought to be admired by Chelsea while reports on Thursday suggested that a £40m bid from Napoli for Garnacho has been rejected.

As products of the United academy, they are identified as prime assets to sell. In Financial Fair Play (FFP) terms, and in the eyes of the Premier League's accountants, players sold from the academy are classified as 'pure profit'.

This means that if they were to be sold, the money accumulated from their departures would significantly and proactively effect their financial status. But speaking prior to kick off on TNT Sports, Scholes demanded that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the United boardroom do not sell Mainoo, whatever the cost.

"It would be absolutely ridiculous if the club had to sell him (Mainoo) or Garnacho as well, he's been mentioned," Scholes insisted. "All the hard work the club had to do, he's probably been here since seven or eight years of age, Mainoo.

"And then all of a sudden you have to sell him for some PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules), it's ridiculous. He is United's brightest spark, he's probably the leading man who could be here for the next five-to-ten years.

"I could see that with Garnacho, I think United can probably get better than Garnacho although he's a young player and there's still probably better to come. I still think he's a little bit scruffy in his technique at times and I think decision making sometimes is really poor.

"I wouldn't be afraid, I wouldn't be worried if they sold Garnacho but Mainoo... I would be offended by that."
