Peniston proud of Wimbledon Qualifying efforts
Ryan Peniston fought hard in a first-set tie-break against France’s Benjamin Bonzi but was ultimately defeated 7-6(10) 6-2
Ryan Peniston was proud of his efforts in Wimbledon Qualifying despite coming up short in his bid to make the main draw at SW19.
The 28-year-old from Southend fought hard in a first-set tie-break against France’s Benjamin Bonzi but was ultimately defeated 7-6(10) 6-2 in almost an hour and a half.
And Peniston, who played Andy Murray in the first round on Centre Court last year, was pleased to have left nothing out on the court in terms of effort.
He said: “I gave everything I had in the match, especially in the first set. I definitely had chances but he played well in the set points.
“I was proud of my effort and I just didn’t have enough left in the tank.
“I’ve just been excited to play every time, to play Wimbledon, it’s an honour so especially after a tough year so far so I’m just enjoying the grass-court season while I can.”

Peniston snapped two ligaments in his ankle and tore another in February but planned a roadmap to get back for the grass-court season.
He made it back for qualifying at the French Open and has been playing on his preferred surface at Surbiton, Ilkley and now Wimbledon Qualifying.
The Essex ace may have missed out on the main event but plans to use the disappointment of missing out this time as fuel to return to the big stage next year.
“I’ve had some amazing Wimbledon memories," he said. "Winning my first round a couple of years ago and playing Andy on Centre last year was some unbelievable experiences that I’m grateful for.
“I’m hopefully going to try and have some more of those moments.
“I’m already looking ahead to next week and next year, next year is a goal to try and get back here and achieve my goals that I’m setting.
“I’m just going to have quite a big-picture perspective, I’m just trying to get back to the level I know I’ve got."
