Pep Guardiola signs two-year contract extension at Man City
Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year extension and insisted he has “everything a manager could ever wish for” at Manchester City.
Guardiola, 53, has agreed terms on the deal until 2027 ensuring he stays at the Etihad Stadium for more than a decade. His contract, which does not have a relegation break clause, runs straight through for another two full seasons rather than being structured with a year plus an option.
“I have said this many times before, but I have everything a manager could ever wish for, and I appreciate that so much,” said Guardiola. “Hopefully now we can add more trophies to the ones we have already won. That will be my focus.
“Manchester City means so much to me. This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club. That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons.”
It means City return to Premier League action without their manager’s future hanging over them as they look to bounce back from four successive losses in all competitions.
“I felt I could not leave now. Maybe the four defeats was why,” Guardiola added. “I think we deserve, after four defeats in a row, to bounce back and try to turn the situation. I think we deserve to be here. I am not arrogant to say, but it’s the truth.”
‘He benefits the English game at large’
Guardiola former terms were due to expire next June. During the last round of Champions League matches he was asked about accepting a position as Brazil national manager but his extension effectively rules out an immediate switch to international football.
“Like every City fan, I am delighted that Pep’s journey with Manchester City will continue; allowing his dedication, passion and innovative thinking to continue to shape the landscape of the game,” added City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak.
“His hunger for improvement and success remains insatiable and the direct beneficiaries of that will continue to be our players and coaching staff, the culture of our club, and the English game at large.
“This renewal will take Pep beyond a decade of coaching Manchester City and the opportunity to continue to re-write the managerial record books.”
Guardiola’s new contract does not contain a break clause should City be relegated from the Premier League in the event they are found guilty of financial wrongdoing by an independent commission. A verdict in the landmark legal case dubbed the “trial of the century” is expected in the first few months of next year but Guardiola has not felt the need to await its outcome before deciding his future.
Key ally leaves next season
Guardiola’s past two contract extensions with City came in November 2020 and November 2022, so this has traditionally been the time of year when he makes a decision on his future.
City became the first English club to win four consecutive league titles last season – their sixth in the past seven years under Guardiola – and, in 2022-23, only the second side to win the treble of Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, after Manchester United in 1998-99.
Guardiola is set to lose a key ally at the end of the season when Txiki Begiristain steps down as director of football, with Hugo Viana, from Portuguese club Sporting, due to replace him.
But Guardiola had long known this was likely to be Begiristain’s last season with City and that situation is understood to have had little bearing over his own future.
Guardiola spent four seasons in charge of Barcelona before enjoying a sabbatical and then taking over at Bayern Munich, where he spent three years. He is in his ninth season as City manager.
City are second in the Premier League, five points behind Liverpool. They are due to face Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad on Saturday.
