Manchester City blew away a 2-0 lead against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night, leaving the 2023 treble winners in danger of exiting the competition in the new-look opening stage, and City fans in The Manchester Evening News comments section are despairing over the state of the squad and club right now.

Pep Guardiola's side conceded four goals from a winning position away at PSG, routed by an energetic team also suffering from a poor campaign in Europe. City lie in the bottom 12 of the revamped Champions League - and if they finish there, they will not progress to the next stage, with no chance of Europa League football to soften the blow, either.

Guardiola told TNT Sports after the game: "First half we have a moment, they have moments. They were better. At 0-2, fine. We scored goals in five minutes, they scored goals in five minutes. We couldn't control the first goal, it was a bit knockout. They lifted in that moment. They were better, faster, win the duels. We couldn't cope with that. Accept the defeat, the best team won. Last chance at home vs [Club] Bruges to qualify."

City's latest collapse has left fans in despair. Commenter Mrcake writes: "This side needs a major rebuild and to strengthen in numbers. It's Pep fault for letting the squad get too old and slow, and not big enough, and not replacing players when they leave. CL doesn't matter now, even if go any further we won't win it playing like this. Better concentrate on staying in the top-four in the PL, which won't be easy."

Sairam makes a January transfer window point: "Need to reinforce the midfield with quality young players very soon! Otherwise, we will remain pathetic like this. No point in going for CL qualification now. Better to put our focus on the Premier League and FA Cup with the new players we are getting, and overhaul the squad further in summer."

Smallsteve reckons that some valuable pieces have already been let go: "Easy with hindsight, but [Cole] Palmer would've been an ideal replacement for [Kevin] De Bruyne. His stats for long through balls are right up there with the best, and that doesn't take into consideration his all-round play and goal-scoring ability.

"We dropped a major one there by letting him go, and will now have to pay huge sums of money to find anyone else with that quality. A bit off-topic, but he would've made a difference [against PSG], of that there is no doubt."

MenTech says: "Don't understand what's going on anymore. Pep doesn't trust our Academy players, but keeps buying youngsters from all over the world. He keeps playing same players we should have moved on in the summer. Despite being one of the richest clubs in the world, we don't have any full-backs. Don't understand this obsession with centre-backs. Not confident about the direction of the club."

Goater10 writes: "We have spent money on two young centre-backs for the future, yet the team has been crying out for new full-backs and midfielders all season. With [Kyle] Walker gone, we don't have one proper full-back. The midfield area is also a joke. [Mateo] Kovacic was on his own last night [against PSG]."
