Manchester City must make a new goalkeeper part of their summer rebuild after Ederson’s Real Madrid nightmare, Jamie Carragher has warned.

Despite making a series of key saves earlier in the night, Ederson was at the heart of yet another late City implosion as Real came from 2-1 down to claim a 3-2 victory in the first-leg of the giants’ Champions League playoff clash.

Pep Guardiola’s men led until the 86th-minute, when Ederson’s poor kick out led to the visitors’s equaliser, scored by former City man Brahim Díaz.

Jude Bellingham then bundled in a stoppage-time winner, after Ederson’s bizarre charge off his line had left the goal empty as Vinicius Jr. to lifted into the path of the England midfielder.

In line with most of Guardiola’s faltering side, Ederson has endured a below-par season, coming after he rejected summer interest from Saudi Arabia to stay into an eighth season at the Etihad.

However, with a rebuild that began with a £180million spree in January set to continue once the campaign is done, former Liverpool defender Carragher believes a new No1 now must be on Guardiola’s wishlist.

“We’re at the stage now that Manchester City need a new goalkeeper,” he said. “Ederson has been fantastic for Man City with the ball but in terms of being a goalkeeper he’s cost them tonight and they need him cos he’s a really senior figure.”

Signed from Benfica in 2017, Ederson has been a vital part of City’s success under Guardiola, winning six Premier League titles in his first seven seasons, as well as the treble two years ago.

While theoretically still in his goalkeeping prime - the Brazilian does not turn 32 until August - his decline this season has been notable, with Guardiola occasionally preferring No2 Stefan Ortega.

“He’s been there, he’s done it and he’s won all the leagues and the Champions Leagues and this has been going on too long with him,” Carragher added.

“That’s nowhere near enough at this level of football - he’s cost his team the game there.”
