Determined Peter Wright insists he will use his Ally Pally pain to push onto a brighter 2025.

The Scottish star had no excuses after his World Championship hat-trick dream was ruthlessly smashed by Stephen Bunting. Wright was gunned down by The Bullet’s fabulous show. Snakebite’s resurgent form and sensational ending of Luke Humphries’ reign as champ raised his hopes for a remarkable third crown.

However, although he couldn’t find a way into the semi-finals where Bunting will face Luke Littler, the 54-year-old is determined to build on his tournament run in the year ahead. Wright had a horrible 2024, but said: “I played well to beat Jermaine [Wattimena] and Luke and I had a good win against Wesley [Plaisier] as well.

"I’m not defending anything at next year’s World Championship. I’ve also got hardly anything to defend apart from the European Championship, so onwards and upwards, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Wright had no excuses after his beating by Bunting as he moaned: “I’m gutted to go up and play like that. I’ve got no excuses. Stephen played better than me and could have put the game to bed earlier. I would have liked to give him a better game, but I didn’t. I managed to get two sets, but I left myself too much to do.

“I wasn’t playing Stephen up there, I was playing myself and just trying to get the dart to go where it was supposed to go.”
