Phil Parkinson has told Wrexham to eradicate the defensive mistakes to give themselves a chance of upsetting League One leaders Birmingham City.

Blues travel to the Racecourse Ground on Thursday evening for round two of the ‘Hollywood Derby’. Wrexham will be out to avenge their 3-1 defeat to Blues in September and reel Chris Davies’ side in.

A victory for Blues would put eight points between themselves and Wrexham, with two games-in-hand, to surely end the Red Dragons’ hopes of catching them.

Wrexham are banking on their unbeaten home record, where 12 of their 15 league wins have come this term, and their defence being at its miserly best. Parkinson wants to see a solid rearguard performance after watching his players gift Shrewsbury two goals last week.

He said: “If you look at the season to date, our defensive record has been very strong, our structure. We’ve given ourselves great platforms and we’ve scored late in games, and we’ve done that by defending strongly as a team and not giving cheap goals away.

“Now, a couple of games, Barnsley and Shrewsbury, there have been moments we’ve got to eradicate from our game. And we will do, because we’ve got good players.

“Our defensive record over the season has been as good as anybody’s but mistakes got punished and we need to reflect on that and look to respond.”
