Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker Gets Redemption After Misspelling 'Eagles' During Rally Chant
"If they didn’t know who the mayor of Philadelphia was, they sure know now!” Parker said
Don’t call it a comeback for Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker!
Parker, 52, showed her city (and the rest of the world) that she can, in fact, spell “Eagles.”
In footage shared by NBC 10 Philadelphia on Thursday, Jan. 23, Parker, who recently made headlines for a spelling snafu, redeemed her spelling skills during a pep rally at LOVE Park held in support of the Philadelphia Eagles. The team is playing the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Jan. 26, for the NFC Championship and a spot at Super Bowl LIX.
“Now listen! Your mayor done went out there and got in trouble, y’all,” Parker said jokingly from the podium at the pep rally.
Laughter and applause could be heard from spectators who seemed to already know what she was referring to.
“I done went out there and we went viral!” she yelled, receiving more applause from the hyped up crowd.
Shifting gears, she added, “Just for the record, on today, we have to show the nation that your mayor’s also a good student! So Philly, are you ready to teach your mayor?”
Fans and staff members alike happily cheered Parker on before proceeding with the spelling lesson.
After the pep rally ended, NBC 10 spoke with the mayor about how her excitement during a Jan. 19 press conference turned into a viral moment due to her "E-L-G-S-E-S, Eagles!" slip-up.
“I’ll tell you this: if they didn’t know who the mayor of Philadelphia was, they sure know now!” Parker playfully said. “And we goin' do everything that we possibly can to make sure we cheer our birds on to victory.”
During a recent broadcast, the news station noted that Parker’s viral misspelling didn’t just make for great laughs. The mayor’s “E-L-G-S-E-S” phrase has now been added to T-shirts that fans can purchase for Eagles football games.
