Sunday league football – one of the sport’s most enduring traditions - could be returning to parts of Norfolk.

The Norfolk Sunday Football League are hoping to reintroduce the game to the King’s Lynn and Great Yarmouth areas.

For the last six seasons there has been no men’s Sunday League provision in either the East or West of Norfolk - since the Great Yarmouth Sunday League and King's Lynn and District Sunday League disbanded.

That left the Norwich and District Sunday League as the only men's Sunday league in the county.

However, the committee of the Norwich and District Sunday League realised that the name itself was potentially off-putting for clubs applying to join them, so this season they have rebranded and become the Norfolk Sunday Football League (NSFL).

The vision of the league committee is to create separate leagues for teams in the East and West of the county as they wouldn't expect clubs to travel to Norwich or beyond to play.

So, for next season, they want to offer:

  • Regionalised leagues – a new West Norfolk League and a new East Norfolk League.

  • 9 v 9 format or 11 v 11 format - to be agreed

  • Flexibility of kick off times with potential to consider a different matchday subject to pitch availability

  • Reduced registration rates for new clubs

NSFL secretary Kev Brown said: “Basically we want to give people the opportunity to play football, as the 8:56 Foundation commented recently to us ‘it would be great to see Sunday football back in West Norfolk... getting men out playing sport, food for both physical and mental health".
