Player ratings: How Bolton Wanderers fared in their 1-0 win at Huddersfield Town
WANDERERS (3-5-2)
LUKE SOUTHWOOD…7.
Didn’t have a save to make until the 78th minute. Composed under pressure when the ball came into the penalty box, though, and his handling was sound when it needed to be.
GETHIN JONES…7.5.
Dug in with determination. Didn’t have much chance to break out and attack, but marshalled Taylor and Charles effectively. Delighted to see him back to his best.
WILL FORRESTER…9.
Imperious. The kind of defending he likes to do, sure, and few in Bolton colours are better at protecting their own penalty box. Magnetic at times.
GEORGE JOHNSTON…8.5.
Ferocious in everything he did, which whipped up a frenzy in the away support behind the goal. Has had a tough time of late, and this is him in peak form.
JOSH DACRES-COGLEY…8.5.
Rarely gets his flowers – but this was a tremendous performance at both ends of the pitch. Created the goal for Collins and kept Evans and Spencer quiet.
AARON MORLEY…7.
Who says he can’t do the defensive side of the game? Didn’t get much chance to use his range of passing but stayed disciplined, which is a huge measure of improvement.
KLAIDI LOLOS…7.
Showed a few glimpses of real quality on the ball and a willingness to join in with the strikers, then had a couple of spells where he was a little wasteful.
GEORGE THOMASON…7.
Seemed to be on a permanent charge, making clearances and winning the ball back in every inch of the Bolton half. A good step forward.
SZABI SCHON…7.5.
If you could bottle his passion for the cause, we would have a field day. Worked tremendously hard but didn’t need to get himself embroiled in the second half nonsense.
VICTOR ADEBOYEJO…7.5.
Had to work his tail off to try and secure the ball for Bolton. Maybe should have scored in the first half but this was his best display for some while.
AARON COLLINS…7.5.
Once again the man to supply the decisive goal. Had to do a lot of unselfish chasing before his big chance, and might have had a penalty.
Subs: Osei-Tutu 6.5, 67 (for Schon) – Dug in with the defensive effort.
McAtee 74 (for Lolos), Randall 74 (for Collins).
Not used: Arfield, Baxter, Murphy, Sheehan.
Huddersfield Town (3-5-2): Chapman; Pearson, Lees, Balker; Turton, Wiles, Hogg, Evans, Spencer; Taylor, Charles.
Subs: Kane 36 (for Wiles), Sorensen 60 (for Turton), Marshall 60 (for Taylor), Koroma 70 (for Balker), Hodge 70 (for Hogg).
Not used: Healey, Nicholls.
Referee: Paul Howard 8/10 – Huddersfield boss Michael Duff won’t agree but the referee was consistent all the way through. He kept things in check with yellow cards and seemed to have a decent dialogue with the players.
Attendance: 19.999.
MAN OF THE MATCH – Will Forrester.
As commanding a defensive performance as Wanderers have had all season. And, yes, Bolton didn’t make him defend with swathes of space behind him, practically daring Huddersfield to break them down, but this young man seems to thrive on the challenge. So why not utilise it?
MOAN OF THE MATCH – Should Bolton have put the game to bed earlier? Joel Randall popped up with some big chances towards the end and was unlucky with a couple of them. Maybe should have scored the one saved by the keeper.
MAGIC MOMENT – There were a few but you couldn’t possibly script Julian Darby taking his 22-month-old grandson to the away supporters in a Mufasa-like Wanderers indoctrination. Flipping brilliant.
ATMOSPHERE – One of the best away followings of the whole season. Freed from the negativity which had built recently, this was Bolton support at its very best.
