Player ratings: How Wanderers players fared in their 3-1 defeat at Rotherham
WANDERERS (3-5-2).
NATHAN BAXTER…6.
Came up with a big save early on to deny Wilks and another in the second half at 2-0 when Wanderers threatened to go under. One of few who can probably escape blame.
WILL FORRESTER…3.5.
Looked shaky from minute one as Powell caused issues on the left, and he didn’t cover himself in glory with the defending prior to the penalty.
RICARDO SANTOS…3.5.
After a few mistakes in recent games, his confidence seems to be low, which for a player relied upon as the last line of defence is not a good look. Penalty and yellow was the right call.
GEORGE JOHNSTON…3.5.
Another one who looks lost at sea at the moment. Had a very early chance to score but otherwise he got attention only for misplacing so many passes.
RANDELL WILLIAMS…3.5.
Two steps backwards after some reasonable performances on the right. So sloppy on the ball at times and dominated by McWilliams and James.
AARON MORLEY…5.
Did work his way into the game a little by the end and also put in some decent set pieces in the first half, which went unpunished.
GEORGE THOMASON…3.5.
His run of poor form continues and resulted in him being hooked early in the second half for Dion Charles. Capable of so much more.
JOEL RANDALL…5.
Popped up a few times in the opening half an hour and offered a few clever touches which hinted at better times ahead. Almost redundant in the second half.
SZABI SCHON…4.5.
Showed a little hustle but still looks like a winger playing wing-back and the gaps behind him can be punished by the smarter teams.
AARON COLLINS…3.5.
Ian Evatt had called for his top scorer to produce ‘moments’ more consistently but here he was a peripheral figure for the whole game.
JOHN MCATEE…4.
Came up with a goal late on but his overall performance lacked any other substance. Given his pedigree, Bolton need a lot more.
Subs: Dacres-Cogley 5, 60 (for Williams) – Added a little more stability.
Charles 5, 60 (for Thomason) – Missed a sitter but did offer more threat.
Not used: Adeboyejo, Jones, Lolos, Matete, Osei-Tutu.
Rotherham United (4-3-1-2): Phillips; Rafferty, Odoffin, Jules, James; MacDonald, Humphreys, Powell; McWilliams; Nombe, Wilks.
Subs: Bramall 67 (for MacDonald).
Not used: Clarke-Harris, Dawson, Green, Holmes, Hugill, Kelly.
Referee: Alan Young 7/10 – Although he was replaced by his fourth official Paul Cooper just before half time after pulling a muscle, Young did get the game’s big call right. It was a penalty and Santos had played for the ball, so it was a yellow card. Cooper had a very easy ride after the break.
Attendance: 10,258 (2,166)
MAN OF THE MATCH – Nathan Baxter.
Got two positive marks against his name by virtue of a couple of saves but by no means a performance he will savour. Morley was Bolton’s best outfield player and even he was below par.
MOAN OF THE MATCH – The lack of fight and the shortage of players who were willing to pick the ball up and be brave in possession at the start of the second half was embarrassing.
MAGIC MOMENT – With absolutely nothing to praise from the Bolton performance, let’s say well done to Rotherham and their ground-staff for getting the game on. They will be glad they mae the effort, now.
ATMOSPHERE – Unforgiving, to say the least. Wanderers’ fans out-sang their hosts throughout the game and let Ian Evatt know their feelings in no uncertain terms. It was an uncomfortable listen at times and it is certainly a long road back now.
