'Playoffs? You kiddin' me?': WM Phoenix Open has had run of bonus golf in the last decade
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — To quote the immortal words of former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Mora: "Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs. You kiddin' me? Playoffs?"
Well, the WM Phoenix Open knows a thing or two about playoffs.
Nick Taylor won the tournament at TPC Scottsdale a year ago on the second playoff hole. It was the sixth playoff at the tournament in the last nine years.
There have been 21 playoffs in tournament history, a dozen since the tournament moved to TPC Scottsdale in 1987. Crunching the numbers, in those 38 events at TPC, there's roughly been a playoff every three years since moving to the Stadium Course.
A WM Phoenix Open playoff could overlap start of Super Bowl
What can make a playoff a little extra nerve-racking, moreso for fans than the players, is that the WM Phoenix Open's final round always precedes the Super Bowl. The golf is scheduled to end around 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) and the NFL title game usually kicks off around 4:30 p.m. Arizona time (6:30 p.m.).
An exciting final round of golf at a popular event like this can make for a great warmup to the Super Bowl but fans always want to see the clinching putt drop before kickoff.
If the recent pattern holds of a playoff coming in an even-numbered year, then sports fans should breathe easy in 2025 so that they won't miss any of the football action.

Of the 21 playoffs, there was just one time where there were more than two players duking it out in extra holes.
