THE Isle of Wight rugby team narrowly missed out on gaining their first win since September.

ISLE OF WIGHT RFC 33, HAVANT III 38

In a thrilling Counties 2 Hampshire match at Wootton Rec on Saturday, the Rangers came close, but ultimately fell short against Havant III.

Despite being the underdogs, the Isle of Wight team put up a strong fight against the league favourites.

Havant III started strongly, scoring within the first five minutes.

Isle of Wight equalised ten minutes later with a well-executed move by Luke Blackman and George Huish.

The first half saw both teams scoring multiple tries, with Havant III leading 31-19 at the break.

In the second half, Isle of Wight's forwards gained an edge in open play, leading to some impressive play.

At 54 minutes, they took the lead, 33-31, with a try by George Butler, converted by Huish.

However, Havant III regained control and scored under the posts with 15 minutes to go.

Isle of Wight launched one last attack as the full time whistle was about to blow, getting within two metres of the try line — but Havant's defence held strong.

Despite missing out on the victory, the Isle of Wight team earned two losing bonus points.
