For virtually all of Plymouth Argyle's supporters young and old it was a huge thrill to see the Greens beat mighty Liverpool for the first time in their lives when Miron Muslic's side shocked the Premier League leaders 1-0 in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round at Home Park on Sunday.

However, for 82-year-old Jed Griffiths it brought back memories of a previous victory for Argyle against Liverpool all the way back in February 1956. That was in Division Two (now the Championship) as the Pilgrims beat their Merseyside visitors 4-0, with Neil Langman completing a hat-trick.

Nearly 70 years later, the Greens achieved the same result in their FA Cup clash and Jed was there to see it, sat in the Mayflower Grandstand, and he loved every minute of it. Jed was born in Brixton, just outside Plymouth, and has remained a staunch Argyle supporter, through thick and thin, even though he has lived for much of his life in Hertfordshire.

His daughter, Lucy, lives in Plympton, though, and Jed can combine family visits with the chance to continue his lifelong football love affair for Argyle.

Jed's first match at Home Park was in May 1953 for a special 'Golden Jubilee' match for Argyle, who had just finished that season fourth in Division Two. They took on Portsmouth, who had been fourth in Division One, in front of a crowd of more than 11,000 and the Greens won 1-0. Jed was immediately hooked by the Argyle experience and it has never left him.

Griffiths told Plymouth Live: "That was it, I had been bitten by the bug. The following season I would be going out there on what was called the Popular side (now the Lyndhurst Road Stand) in the open air, of course. In those days the crowds were enormous and we young boys were passed down to the front. We used to watch the games clinging to the railings.

"It has made for 70 years-plus of hurt as they say but nevertheless you come back for more because one day, one day they might well make it into the Premier League. Just please!"

Jed's favourite memory of Argyle is when they won the Division Three (now League One) title under Jack Rowley in the 1958/59 season, when Wilf Carter and Jimmy Gauld combined for 43 goals between them. "That was such a terrific team," he said.

"I remember Jimmy Gauld who used to gather the ball in the Argyle half and dribbled through most of the opposition and then slotted the ball into the net. You have never seen anything like it. It was real Roy of the Rovers stuff."

Jed still gets to as many Argyle games as he can, home and away. "I broke my arm the year before last, and I'm left-handed so it would have to be my left," he said. "I'm a bit unsteady on my feet compared to how it was but when I come down here (to Plymouth) it just so happens my honour that Plymouth Argyle happen to be at home!"

Sadly, his brother, Stan, also an avid Argyle fan, passed away last November. "I think that victory on Sunday was for him," said Jed. "I said before the game all I wanted was just one goal to cheer and remember. It was a lot more than that wasn't it? I'm still smiling, I'm so happy.

"I think it ranks along with the games like when they beat Leeds in the 50s 4-3, John Charles scoring from 35 yards, and beating West Ham in the FA Cup 3-0."

Jed thought Home Park was 'bouncing' as Argyle produced their FA Cup heroics against Liverpool at the weekend. "I think it was probably the best atmosphere I have ever seen there," he said. "There is always a quiet bit, but there were no quiet bits on Sunday, everybody was up for it right through until the end."

Like many of the Green Army, recent results - and the particularly the one against Liverpool - has given Jed the belief that Argyle can win their fight against relegation from the Championship over the rest of this season.

"I have studied the fixture list and it's all in the diary," he said. "I think they can win nine or 10 of those remaining games, looking at the opposition that's there. Being Argyle, of course, they will probably take it to the last day and beat Leeds to stay up!

"I'm reasonably confident that they can do it. I met the manager (Miron Muslic) on Monday morning in the Argyle TV studio and he really impressed me. His calmness, his obvious commitment to the club, and such a nice bloke as well.

"It was the way he set them out against Liverpool and the way he organised them. Looking down from the stand, you could see that solid back line right across the pitch. He got (Conor) Hazard to kick the ball out long, not messing about in your third of the field. Get it up there.

"I know it sounds crude but, nevertheless, if you get the ball up the field you have got more chance of keeping it up there. Also, the commitment in the tackles was impressive. I'm so impressed by our new signings at the back. That's what gives me confidence. I think they have gelled pretty well across the back of the park there."
