Plymouth Argyle January transfer window strategy impacted by loan limit
It has already been a busy winter transfer window for Plymouth Argyle and plenty more ins and outs can be expected before it closes at 11pm on Monday, February 3.
Michael Baidoo has completed a club record signing from Swedish side Elfsborg while Tymoteusz Puchacz has joined from German Bundesliga club Holstein Kiel on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy.
The most notable of four departures from Home Park has been defender Lewis Gibson in a £1.5 million transfer to Championship rivals Preston North End. He made his debut for them when he played the whole of their 2-1 Emirates FA Cup third round home win against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

Adam Forshaw, Andre Gray and Marko Marosi have also left the club, while there has been the now regular transfer window speculation about star attacker Morgan Whittaker, who has been the subject of a bid from Burnley which Plymouth Live understands was nowhere near Argyle's valuation of the 24-year-old.
There has even been talk that Premier League clubs are 'tracking' Argyle's 16-year-old Tegan Finn, although that is hardly surprising given the fact that someone of his age playing three times already in the Championship is not commonplace and was bound to have attracted attention.
Argyle, under their new head coach Miron Muslic, will be all too well aware of the importance of strengthening their squad as they look to escape Championship relegation but, as it stands, any new recruits are highly unlikely to be loan signings.
That is because the Pilgrims already have five players on loan - Ibrahaim Cissoko, Darko Gyabi, Michael Obafemi, Puchacz and Muhamed Tijani - and that is the maximum amount that can be named on a match day teamsheet. So if they were to add another then one of the others would have to miss out.
At the moment, Tijani is still sidelined by the hamstring injury he suffered in late September, but the on-loan Slavia Prague striker is expected to return to full training later this month. To date, he has made just one start and two substitute appearances in the Championship this term and has yet to open his goal scoring account.
Obafemi, who has netted twice in 10 starts and 10 substitute appearances, is on loan from Burnley so, therefore, he will not be available for selection when the Clarets visit Home Park next Wednesday (February 22, 8pm kick-off). The same will apply to Gyabi when his parent club Leeds United play at The Theatre of Greens on the final day of the Championship campaign in May.
Given the circumstances, further Argyle signings this transfer window will almost certainly be on permanent deals. As the two so far this month have been from clubs in Sweden and Germany, while the Pilgrims have hired an Austrian as head coach, more new recruits from Europe has to be a distinct possibility.
