Plymouth Argyle will be looking to secure a place in the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup for the first time since the 2017/18 season when they take on Lincoln City at Home Park tomorrow (7pm).

Jamie Lowry's Pilgrims entered the competition at the third round stage by virtue of the club's Championship status, and won 4-2 after extra-time away to Carlisle United at Brunton Park last month.

After an 18-day break over the Christmas and new year period, Lowry's squad return to action against Lincoln, excited to play under the lights at the Theatre of Greens.

Lowry told Plymouth Live: "The boys were a bit nervous after Carlisle away in terms of what they would get so we were delighted when it came out at home.

"We have got to treat the opposition with respect, like we do everybody, but the home draw and playing in front of Argyle fans will be really special for the lads."

Argyle trailed 2-1 late in their third round tie against Carlisle before Harry Shield grabbed a late equaliser. They went on to score twice more in extra-time, through Seb Campbell and Frankie Maund.

Lowry said: "It was a great experience and that's what we always talk about with the lads. We want to give them as much experience as we can that's like around a first team environment, so the travel, the staying up there and everything like that.

"In terms of the game it was very topsy-turvy and emotional but the boys came out with the character and personality they showed. It was a fantastic experience and a real positive one.

"We stayed up after the game. We got back to the hotel and the boys were exhausted. They had a bit of food and went straight to bed.

"As you can imagine, on the way home it was very quiet with the boys sleeping, but in the changing room it was really good. Even though I think they are quite a tight-knit group anyway, that made them even more tighter and gave them more belief."

The last time Argyle reached the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup they were a League One club so entered the competition at the first round stage.

With future first teamers Michael Cooper, Luke Jephcott and Adam Randell in the squad at the time, they famously beat Manchester City on penalties in the third round at Home Park, before eventually losing to Fulham after extra-time , also at the Theatre of Greens.

Lincoln have a record of seven wins, two draws and two defeats in the EFL Youth Alliance North Division this season. They have reached the fourth round after wins away to Lichfield City (5-0) and Bolton Wanderers (3-2) and at home to Wrexham (4-2).

Lowry said: "They are a good side, doing really well in their area division. They have had two really good results against Bolton and Wrexham. They are solid, really well organised, good on transition.

"They are really strong on their counter attacking so we have got a plan to try and nullify that as much as we can. It will be a difficult, game but it's one that we look forward to.

"Like we talk about with the lads all the time, it's about us. Yes, we are mindful of what they can offer but I think if we pass the ball properly, play our patterns and get our top players on the ball then we will be confident."

Argyle regularly play their home Youth Alliance games at Millennium Fields so the chance to play under lights at Home Park is one the young Pilgrims are sure to relish.

Lowry said: "I think probably everyone has experience of playing at Home Park, maybe not all of them under lights, but definitely being on the pitch.

"It's a little bit part of my role, and the staff's role, to kind of keep them focused and not get them too excited, and keep that calmness.

"The way we play is to be nice and calm, and on the ball we don't want to turn it maybe into a bit of a transition game, or be a bit frantic. We want to be in control of the game."

On the possibility of Argyle getting into the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup, Lowry added: "It would mean a lot to the club, it would mean a lot to the academy as well.

"It's part of everything, it's not just the 18s. It's all the hard work through the age groups, and the staff that have put all of them hours in at different venues. Here's our chance to support them. It's for them as well. It's not just for the under-18s group, it's for the whole of the academy what we are trying to achieve and progress with."
