Dutch defender Mike Eerdhuijzen seems set to become Plymouth Argyle's first signing since the appointment of Miron Muslic as head coach.

It was first reported by Sky Sports News today that Argyle have had an offer accepted by Sparta Rotterdam for the 24-year-old, and Plymouth Live also understands that to be the case. The hope is to finalise the deal in time for Eerdhuijzen to be available for the away game against Sunderland on Saturday.

Muslic admitted yesterday that Argyle were facing an 'urgent situation' to sign a defender because Brendan Galloway has been ruled out for the rest of this season by injury while Kornel Szucs is also currently sidelined. That has left the Pilgrims with Victor Palsson and Julio Pleguezuelo as their only two fit central defenders.

A report on the Sky Sports Transfer Centre from Lyall Thomas and Mark McAdam this lunchtime said: "Plymouth have had an offer accepted by Sparta Rotterdam for centre-back Mike Eerdhuijzen.

"The Championship strugglers are trying to beat the Friday deadline to get him registered to play this weekend. There are still aspects of the deal still to finalise, but it is hoped the player can travel to the UK to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours."

Eerdhuijzen began his career at FC Volendam and joined Sparta Rotterdam in the summer of 2022. He has gone on to play 61 times for them in the Dutch top division. The defender has started 17 of Sparta's 19 Eredivisie games this season, most recently the 1-1 draw at home to RKC Waalwijk on Sunday.

Argyle have made two signings so far during the January transfer window, with Michael Baidoo arriving from Swedish side Elfsborg on a contract until 2028 for an undisclosed club record fee while Tymoteusz Puchacz has joined on loan from German Bundesliga club Holstein Kiel.
