Plymouth Argyle moved out of the relegation zone in the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division with their second away win of the season after defeating AFC Wimbledon 2-1 at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Sunday.

The result earned them a crucial three points in their fight to stay up and saw Gwalia United, who lost 3-0 at home to Watford, drop into the bottom two.

Wimbledon took the lead through Dior Knorr, but it lasted just 10 minutes before Charlotte Whitmore levelled things out. The Pilgrims striker then went on to steal all three points in second half stoppage time.

The Dons started the game the better of the two, looking to steal an early goal and had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for offside.

The visitors had to make an early substitution when captain Giota Papaioannou went down but travelling fans were relieved to see her walk off the pitch. Amii Kearley came on and the armband went to fellow centre-back Caitlin Smith.

Argyle conceded another corner, which was nearly turned into their goal through an Imy Crawford clearance, but they got lucky, and it went wide.

The hosts took the lead after a blistering run from Knorr which saw her race past Kearley and easily beat Lily Felgate. Ellie Dorey had another chance shortly after which was saved by the Argyle 'keeper before Whitmore got her 10th goal of the season to put the visitors back into the match.

Both sides had strong chances before the end of the first half, with Felgate and Rose Kite being called into action, but they entered the break level.

The Dons started the half stronger but their early chances were cleared with ease. Both sides made changes on the hour, with Argyle bringing Lulu Jarvis on for Fern Orchard and Wimbledon taking Dorey and Kaylee Buckingham off for Kau’inohea Solomon-Taylor and Leanne Bell.

The visitors took confidence from some fresh legs and looked set to have a chance on goal but Ava Kuyken’s cross trickled out of play.

Wimbledon went down to 10 after Rosie Russell was sent to the sin bin for dissent but had also been awarded a free-kick in Argyle’s half. Ashlee Hincks’ cross found its way into the box but the effort was flicked wide.

Kuyken had an unbelievable strike parried away by Kite and subsequently earned the Greens a corner. The tide was turning in favour of the visitors, and they were on the hunt for a winner, with efforts from both Crawford and substitute Katie Dickson but neither were able to find the target.

Wimbledon went down to 10 for the second time in the match, this time Hannah Mackenzie was booked for dissent after making a challenge on Georgia Wilson.

With time ticking down six minutes into added time, Whitmore found herself with the ball at her feet and decided to flick it round the defender, watching it roll over the line, to the dismay of the home fans.

Argyle will hope to continue their successful start to the year and pick up more points on the road, when they face Oxford United at Raynes Park Vale on Sunday.
