Plymouth’s post-Rooney lift continues with FA Cup shock over Brentford

Life after Wayne Rooney reached new heights as Plymouth sprung one of the shocks of the FA Cup third round by dumping out Brentford.

The Championship’s bottom club stunned their Premier League opponents with Morgan Whittaker’s fine strike from outside the area silencing the Gtech Stadium and denting one of the best home records in the country.

Rooney’s unhappy spell in charge ended on New Year’s Eve after just 23 matches, with successor Miron Muslic in the stands to witness the shock of round so far as Plymouth’s mini-revival continued, following creditable draws against Bristol City and Stoke City in the league.

A documentary chronicling Plymouth’s battle to survive was reportedly shelved during a downturn in results under Rooney, with no plans to revive it. Unfortunate timing, perhaps, though for those visiting fans in attendance they will have memories to savour. It was the club’s first victory over a top-flight club for more than 40 years.

Plymouth have conceded 35 goals in 14 away league games this season, while Brentford’s home record is second only to Liverpool in England. But Thomas Frank, who made six changes, was left shocked at the end as the visitors won away for the first time this season.

A desperate Frank introduced Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in a bid to breach the worst defence in the Championship but Plymouth caretaker coach Kevin Nancekivell secured a stunning victory to reach the fourth round.

Despite a positive showing in the early stages from the visitors, Brentford playmaker Fabio Carvalho let fly from the edge of the area and his effort, which looked destined for the top left-hand corner, was tipped out for a corner by goalkeeper Conor Hazard.

Plymouth went close in the 21st minute. Bali Mumba drove down the flank, combined with winger Callum Wright, who cut in and saw a shot from a tight angle parried away by Hakon Valdimarsson.

Rico Henry started his first match since returning from a long-term knee injury he suffered in September 2023, and the left-back was in the thick of the action towards the back end of the first half with multiple dangerous sprints in the final third.

Frank turned to the bench in the form of 13-goal forward Bryan Mbeumo after the break, but the decision did not turn the tide in the hosts’ favour as Argyle defender Matthew Sorinola headed over unmarked at the back post. Wissa also came on as Brentford looked for a winner, but Frank’s rotations failed to pay dividends as they struggled to create anything of note.

Brentford’s poor showing was eventually punished eight minutes from time when Whittaker, who was bright all game, produced a wonderful goal. The forward retrieved the ball on the right, easily jinked past defenders before producing a driven finish into the bottom corner in front of the travelling supporters to end Plymouth’s 11-game winless run.

Walker asks for move abroad

Pep Guardiola has said Kyle Walker is looking for a potential move abroad after the full-back was left out of the squad today.

Asked in the post-match press conference why Walker was not included, Guardiola said: “Two days ago Kyle asked to explore the option to play abroad.

“He went to (director of football) Txiki Begiristain. For that reason I prefer to play (players) whose mind is here.”

Guardiola on Grealish goal

On Jack Grealish ending his goal drought, Pep Guardiola told the BBC: “He made a good assist as well, not just the goal. He scored a goal, made an assist. Jack’s a special player, not always one to score a lot of goals but it depends on him.

“If he can perform well, he’ll take the opportunity to keep going and going.

“All the players depend on the performance in training sessions and when they have minutes to play. It’s simple, not just for Jack, for all of them.

“I’ve been manager here for more than 500 games and we’ve made an incredible 487 or 488 games. Then we had 11, 12 or 13 bad games.

“The problem that we’ve had is that we’ve had an incredible amount of injuries so we could not train and we could not compete. It’s so difficult but step by step, people are coming back.

“This season or maybe next season, new players come in and you have to fight for your position. When someone pushes you, you have competition and you give your best.”

08:24 PM GMT

109 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1

Wednesday cope with back-to-back corners from Coventry with the second resulting in a moment of pinball before the visitors scrambled it away.

McAtee a ‘special player’ says Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told the BBC: “We won finally a game with a good margin, all respect for Salford. It was not easy with the man marking but we were clinical up front and happy with the performance.”

On James McAtee’s performance, he said: “I’m so happy for him, he’s a special player. Scoring a hat-trick is not easy. He started a little bit flat but afterwards he has incredible sense in front of goal. He has the right tempo, he changed the rhythm to score.

“Of course, [McAtee] can play better. He scored three goals but he can play better. First half was not his best but his work ethic, his composure and his rhythm... he’s a special player.

“He’s been at City for a long time, a City supporter and he was one of the biggest talents at the academy from the generation of Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Liam Delap. He played with these guys and was the captain of them.

“I’m really, really pleased he’s here with us.”

08:04 PM GMT

Robinson ‘proud’ of his players

After seeing side hammered by Manchester City, Salford City boss Karl Robinson told the BBC: “You always know you’re at the mercy of the quality of the competition. Man City and Pep have never disrespected anybody and tonight they showed us why they are what they are and why he is who he is.

“It’s about dusting ourselves off, we’ve come on so much in 12 months and to be where we are in the league. We have one goal and that is to get out of this league. This is a glimmer of what we want to be and we know we’ve got so much to improve and we know where we want to be.

“I said to the players I would have taken eight goals conceded in seven games, I just didn’t expect them to all come in one. We’re proud of them, I really am. They never let me down. We make human error but that’s part of the level we’re at. Some of the things we weren’t so good at, we’ll make sure we’re better. We’ll learn because of today.

“For me, it’s not a case of me trying to pick them up or have a go at them. You take it in the chin. You hope for these glamour ties and we managed to get it. This was never a game we would look at and use as a disappointment moving forward. We make sure we plan properly for our next game.”

08:01 PM GMT

91 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1

We are back underway in Coventry as extra-time begins. Will either side find the winner or will we see the first penalty shoot-out of the third round?

07:56 PM GMT

Full time: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1

We are going to extra time! Incredible drama in Coventry. Wednesday hadn’t really threatened all evening but a late of spell of pressure and scramble from a corner produced the all-important equaliser.

07:54 PM GMT

GOAL! Wednesday snatch a late equaliser!

Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 1 (Musaba) I don’t believe it! Just as the day’s action was set to conclude, Wednesday have their equaliser.

With the home side briefly down to 10 men as Binks received treatment, the corner comes in and is turned home by Musaba to take the game to extra-time.

07:53 PM GMT

90+2 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

07:48 PM GMT

Disallowed goal! Coventry denied

Coventry think they have doubled their lead but Wednesday keeper Charles is awarded a somewhat generous foul.

A reminder that if the visitors do manage to find an equaliser this will go to extra-time with replays scrapped this year.

McAtee on ‘special moment’ as he bags hat-trick

Man City hat-trick hero James McAtee has said to the BBC: “I was quite frustrated in the first half, wasn’t seeing much of the ball. When the first one went in, my confidence was up and I kept scoring.

“I’ve been here since I was 10 and it’s a special moment for me. Something I’ll remember forever. I don’t think I needed to prove myself but to get out there and show people what I can do, it’s a good moment for me.”

07:45 PM GMT

86 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

Wednesday have really struggled to create this evening but Bannan has just rifled a dipping effort from th edge of the box, which forces Dovin into making a smart stop.

07:42 PM GMT

83 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

We’re into the closing stages at Coventry where Frank Lampard’s side continue to lead by the single goal.

It hasn’t been a match of the highest of quality but the home side will not care if they can hang on to their advantage.

07:39 PM GMT

Full time: Leeds United 1 Harrogate Town 0

Harrogate have a free-kick inside the Leeds half and they send their keeper forward. Leeds clear and threaten to counter for a second but Harrogate manage to stifle any chance at a shot.

It doesn’t matter though as the referee blows the full-time whistle and Leeds are through to the fourth round thanks to Ramazani’s second-half goal, but they were made to work for it!

07:37 PM GMT

Full time: Manchester City 8 Salford City 0

Gundogan is denied well by the Salford keeper and that is the final action of the game as the referee plays no added time.

Emphatic, ruthless and clinical from the Premier League champions. A great day for James McAtee who takes home the match ball.

07:34 PM GMT

87 mins: Manchester City 8 Salford City 0

Salford are immensely close to grabbing a consolation but after being played through, Taylor’s powerful drive from inside the box is flicked behind for a corner by Ederson.

07:32 PM GMT

89 mins: Leeds United 1 Harrogate Town 0

Joseph holds the ball up nicely on the edge of the box but he’s put under pressure as he takes aim and it goes high and wide.

07:31 PM GMT

87 mins: Leeds United 1 Harrogate Town 0

Leeds counter well with Joseph driving the ball up the pitch. As he reaches the area, he plays his final ball for James slightly too wide and the winger is denied as he takes aim from a tight angle.

07:28 PM GMT

GOAL! McAtee has his hat-trick

Manchester City 8 Salford City 0 (McAtee) Grealish’s ball from the left of the box picks out McAtee on the penalty spot and the academy graduate can stretch out his right foot to guide the ball into the bottom right corner. Getting messy now for the League Two outfit.

07:25 PM GMT

81 mins: Leeds United 1 Harrogate Town 0

Ramazani goes into the book after delaying the restart.

Moments later and Darlow is forced into action as he comes rushing out to smother March who looked in on goal and was attempting to knock it round the keeper. Had to be timed to perfection from Darlow and it was.

07:23 PM GMT

77 mins: Manchester City 7 Salford City 0

Salford go close to getting one back as Kovacic has his pocket pinched with his back to goal but Stockton lashes his effort from the edge of the area wide of the near post.

07:19 PM GMT

GOAL! McAtee adds a seventh as he bags his brace

Manchester City 7 Salford City 0 (McAtee) To answer my previous question, his could well reach double figures.

McAtee is found nicely inside the box by a slicing through ball by Foden. He is in acres after being played onside by the right back and he can slot home for his second and City’s seventh.

07:17 PM GMT

57 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

Sheffield Wednesday should have equalised here but Ihiekwe puts a free header from inside the area over the bar. Huge chance with their first attempt of the match.

07:15 PM GMT

GOAL! Doku makes it six from the spot

Manchester City 6 Salford City 0 (Doku) Man City win the penalty as Doku’s left-footed effort from inside the box is ruled to have been blocked by an arm and the winger steps up to just roll his spot-kick into the bottom right corner for his second of the evening. Could we see double figures here?

07:14 PM GMT

70 mins: Leeds United 1 Harrogate Town 0

Harrogate have a corner which causes Leeds all sorts of problems as it drops inside the six-yard box but the home side do manage to scramble it clear.

07:09 PM GMT

GOAL! McAtee makes it five for City

Manchester City 5 Salford City 0 (McAtee) Nunes plays a wonderful ball into the right channel for Doku who whips in a first time ball across the box. McAtee is arriving and gets a flick on the ball at the near post to poke home. A great goal.

07:06 PM GMT

46 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

We are back underway for the second half in Coventry as the home side lead Sheffield Wednesday. The visitors have brought on Josh Windass and Michael Ihiekwe at the interval.

07:04 PM GMT

GOAL! Ramazani breaks the deadlock for Leeds

Leeds United 1 Harrogate Town 0 (Ramazani) Leeds have huffed and puffed and they finally have their breakthrough.

Solomon, out on the left, takes the ball to the byline before hanging up a cross into the centre of the box were Ramazani is waiting in space to head home.

07:00 PM GMT

56 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

Now Harrogate go close! Daly charges Ampadu down and blocks the clearance high up the pitch. The ball drops to March on the edge of the area but his side-footed effort is saved by Darlow.

06:59 PM GMT

54 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

Leeds have continued to push for the opener and they go so close! Byram manages to keep the ball in and pulls the ball back to Solomon.

Just inside the left of the area, he looks to curl it into the top right corner. It has a lovely shape on it but grazes the top of the bar.

06:56 PM GMT

GOAL! Grealish ends his goal drought

Manchester City 4 Salford City 0 (Grealish) Less than three minutes into the second half and Jack Grealish wins the penalty for City as Salford give it away cheaply when looking to play out.

It’s the City number 10 who steps up after going without a goal in 2024 and he sweeps it emphatically into the bottom right corner.

06:51 PM GMT

46 mins: Manchester City 3 Salford City 0

The players are making their way back out at the Etihad and Akanji is coming on to replace Ake.

Can Salford find a consolation in this second period? It’s the visitors who get this second half underway.

06:49 PM GMT

46 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

As the first half in Coventry draws to a close, things are back underway at Elland Road. Will Harrogate continue to frustrate Leeds?

06:45 PM GMT

44 mins: Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

Coventry went close to doubling their lead as a cross fell to Thomas-Asante but he saw his half-volley fly over the crossbar. They have grown into this opening period, the home side.

06:36 PM GMT

Half-time: Manchester City 3 Salford City 0

O’Riley’s goal was the final notable action of that first half and, as expected, it’s looking like a straightforward evening for the Premier League champions.

06:35 PM GMT

Half-time: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

It’s half-time in Yorkshire and Harrogate have made it to half-time with their clean sheet in tact. Leeds have been poor really.

The home side did come close to breaking the deadlock just before the interval when Joseph struck the upright from the edge of the box but Daniel Farke will want far more from his side in the second half.

06:32 PM GMT

GOAL! O’Riley adds a third for City

Manchester City 3 Salford City 0 (O’Riley) As we approach half-time at the Etihad, Nico O’Reilly has put the game out of sight for Salford.

He feeds Doku to his left before the winger beats his man on the outside and pulls it back to the youngster. He takes a touch inside the box before clinically finishing into the bottom right corner with his left foot.

06:30 PM GMT

GOAL! Kitching opens the scoring for Coventry

Coventry City 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0 (Kitching) Moments after putting their first good move of the match together, Coventry now do take the lead through Liam Kitching.

The visitors fail to deal with the corner as it hits a defender’s chest before falling at the feet of Kitching who lashes home.

06:27 PM GMT

24 mins: Coventry City 0 Sheffield Wednesday 0

After a sluggish start, Coventry up the pace and quality as Torp slides a ball into Simms. The forward gets past his man before rifling an effort on goal but Charles saves well.

06:25 PM GMT

38 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

Leeds have a corner but again Rothwell’s delivery is not up to scratch and is cleared at the near post.

Moments later and Ramazani cuts in from the left and looks to curl one but it goes high and wide and is met by big cheers from the travelling fans.

06:22 PM GMT

35 mins: Manchester City 2 Salford City 0

Salford produce their best move of the game as they combine down their left before Kouassi cuts in and takes aim from inside the area. His effort is tame but is on target and gives Ederson something to do.

06:19 PM GMT

32 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

March slices down Gnonto on the edge of the Harrogate box and presents a chance for one of Leeds’ free-kick experts.

It’s Rothwell who steps up but instead of shooting he goes for the disguised cross but it goes over everyone and that sums up the quality so far.

06:15 PM GMT

28 mins: Manchester City 2 Salford City 0

Salford’s 18-year-old keeper Matt Young goes down off the ball and requires treatment but after a couple of minutes he is able to continue.

It’s been really, really comfortable for the home side so far.

06:12 PM GMT

11 mins: Coventry City 0 Sheffield Wednesday 0

There’s a booking for Coventry too as Jack Rudoni goes in late to the challenge. Frank Lampard’s side are yet to get going this evening.

06:10 PM GMT

23 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

Leeds muster their first convincing effort on goal but Largie Ramzani’s effort is straight at Harrogate keeper James Belshaw.

Harrogate’s Bryn Morris is then the first player to go into the book after pulling down Manor Solomon.

06:08 PM GMT

GOAL! Mubama scores on debut

Manchester City 2 Salford City 0 (Mubama) Now that was all rather easy. Savinho slides the underlapping Nunes into the box and he dinks it round the keeper for Mubama to tap home on his debut.

Liam Shepherd gets a yellow for a rash challenge he had made on Doku what felt about five minutes earlier but play hadn’t stopped until the goal.

06:05 PM GMT

19 mins: Manchester City 1 Salford City 0

Manchester City should double their lead as Nathan Ake nods a corner back across goal but Simpson-Pusey somehow doesn’t make enough contact to head home from a yard out.

06:03 PM GMT

17 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

Harrogate were making the case for a penalty after Josh March appeared to be tripped in the Leeds area by Joshua Guilavogui. Referee James Bell waves it away though.

06:01 PM GMT

15 mins: Leeds United 0 Harrogate Town 0

Harrogate Town of League Two are having to sit very deep at the moment against Leeds but they have got through the opening quarter of an hour unscathed.

06:01 PM GMT

The final game of the day is underway as Coventry City host Sheffield Wednesday in an all-Championship encounter.

Morecambe manager on ‘fantastic day for fans’

Following Morecambe’s 5-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, manager Derek Adams told BBC: “I thought we acquitted ourselves very well in the first half, we were in the penalty area numerous times.

“They became a wee bit clinical in the second half.

“It was important, he [Harry Burgoyne] saved a penalty and guessed the right way and made a really good save.

“Throughout the game we had opportunities on goal. We could have done better and we should have scored a goal. That’s been the story of our season.

“It’s a fantastic day for our fans. It was great for so many of them to come.

“We’ve taken in probably about £350,000 from today. It’s a lot of money for us.”

05:57 PM GMT

Robinson on Class of ‘92

Speaking before kick-off, Salford City manager Karl Robinson told BBC: “We have found a way and found a system that suits the players we have. We have pulled together and made it difficult for the opposition in certain games - this will be a certain type of game.”

On the Class of ‘92 ownership influence, he said: “We speak consistently. They are always there offering help and assistance.

“We don’t waste them being there. It would be naive from us as staff and players if we didn’t listen.

“Yes, they played at a higher level, but they can speak to players in League One and Two.”

05:55 PM GMT

GOAL! Doku gives City early lead

Manchester City 1 Salford City 0 (Doku) Nunes pinches it in midfield before driving towards the edge of the box and laying it across to Grealish to his left.

He plays it on one more to Doku who curls home first time into the bottom right corner. The keeper gets fingertips to it but it’s not enough.

05:52 PM GMT

‘Still big problems in back four’, says Guardiola

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, told BBC: “We want to challenge and we recognise the stages every season. It doesn’t matter the results what we have had in the past month - we have to try out best.”

On debutant Divin Mubama, he said: “We are so satisfied because we have seen him in the training session. An incredible work ethic and of course, in the midfield and up front we are recovering many players.

“In the back four there’s still big problems and unfortunately you have to play with players in different positions.”

Discussing Salford City, he said: “The Premier League is better than the other teams, but today it doesn’t matter what the leagues are.

“The manager will come well prepared. They’re unbeaten in the past five-to-six games and that shows how difficult it will be.”

05:46 PM GMT

Later kick-offs underway

We are underway at the Etihad for Salford’s visit to Manchester City while proceedings are also up and running at Elland Road for the all-Yorkshire clash between Leeds United and Harrogate Town.

Tosin ‘on hat-trick for first time in his career’

After bagging a brace in Chelsea’s win over Morecambe, defender Tosin Adarabioyo told the BBC: “First time in my professional career I was on a hat-trick. I wanted to have another shot but the moment never came.”

On his first goal taking a wicked deflection, he joked: “Really? I didn’t see that happen, I thought it was a clean strike in.”

Discussing his second strike, he said: “I got into a nice position and I was in a position I look to shoot in. I managed to wrap my foot around it and put it top bins.”

On the crowd shouting shoot every time he touched the ball, he said: “I heard it a couple of times when I got the ball on the halfway line. I wanted to but I was too far out.

“Playing games and being able to showcase your abilities is always great, so it was nice to do that one today.”

04:09 PM GMT

Half-time changes for Chelsea

Morecambe players will be relieved to see that their first half efforts are rewarded by Sancho, Gusto and Cucurella coming on...

04:07 PM GMT

GOAL! Semenyo adds a fourth for Bournemouth

Bournemouth 4 West Brom 1 (Semenyo) Well that didn’t take long! Just two minutes after the interval and half-time substitute has made it four.

03:59 PM GMT

Forest fans may not deliver on chant today

Deadlock broken at the City Ground, and probably a good time to mention the chant Nottingham Forest supporters dedicate to Ryan Yates.

“If Yatesey scores, we’re in the [River] Trent.”

With temperatures below freezing in Nottingham, you’d have to be a little bit bonkers jumping into the water on today of all days.

Yates has put Forest in front with a close-range header from Ramon Sosa’s cross.

Will let you know if there are any brave swimmers spotted.

03:57 PM GMT

03:47 PM GMT

GOAL! Mitchell scores his second to give Exeter the lead

Exeter City 2 Oxford United 1 (Mitchell) Mitchell scores his second of the afternoon and the home side have turned this tie on its head! The visitors fail to deal with a ball into the box and the Exeter man sees his effort take a nick and go into the bottom corner.

03:42 PM GMT

GOAL! Tosin opens the scoring for Chelsea

Chelsea 1 Morecambe 0 (Tosin) With the game approaching the interval, Chelsea have now taken the lead through Tosin. It’s a rather fortunate goal and harsh on Morecambe as Chelsea probe around the edge of the box before the defender’s strike is deflected off Jones and hits the back of the net.

03:41 PM GMT

GOAL! Yates gives Forest the lead

Nottingham Forest 1 Luton Town 0 (Yates) Forest have been piling the pressure on and they have finally made the breakthrough as Sosa’s inswinging ball from the left is headed home by Yates.

03:39 PM GMT

Leicester City 5 Queens Park Rangers 2 (Justin) For the first time in the game, the home side have a three-goal advantage and it’s Justin once again with his second of the day. The full-back fires home from inside the area following Daka’s ball.

03:22 PM GMT

Morecambe keeper well off his line

Some FA Cup magic at Stamford Bridge and Morecambe will be very happy there is no VAR in the third round. Harry Burgoyne was way off his line when Christopher Nkunku struck his penalty. But, seriously, who cares? That was a fantastic moment - unless you are a Chelsea fan.

03:22 PM GMT

Low-key start at the City ground

Very low-key start here at the City Ground, and this certainly feels like a starter before the big night on Tuesday.

With league leaders Liverpool rolling into Nottingham next week, Nuno Espirito Santo has made 11 changes to the team here.

In fairness, it’s still a team brimming with experience, quality and potential, with rare starts for James Ward-Prowse, Carlos Miguel and Willy Boly.

There have been a few penalty appeals from Forest’s Paraguay international Ramon Sosa but, so far, that’s your lot folks.

03:20 PM GMT

Penalty missed!

Chelsea win the spot kick against Morecambe as Songo’o handles it following Felix’s cross. It’s Nkunku who steps up but he has his effort saved by Burgoyne! What a moment for the League Two side.

Sunderland 0 Stoke City 1 (Cannon) Stoke City have taken an early lead at the Stadium of Light as Tom Cannon converts from the spot after O’Nein tripped the Stoke man.

03:04 PM GMT

3 mins: Nottingham Forest 0 Luton Town 0

Sosa goes to ground inside the area and is appealing for the penalty but the referee waves play on.

03:01 PM GMT

3pm matches underway

We are getting underway around the grounds in the eight ties kicking off at 3pm. Will we see any upsets in a third round lacking such results so far?

03:00 PM GMT

Norwich goals hard to come by against Brighton

Norwich won their last FA Cup meeting against Brighton in 2003 but have failed to score against them in their last four games in all competitions with the South-Coast side winning two of those ties.

The last two meetings came in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign and both finished goalless.

02:59 PM GMT

Upset unlikely at Stamford Bridge

This is just the second competitive meeting between Chelsea and Morecambe. However, the previous meeting came just four years ago also in the third round of the FA Cup as the Premier League side came out on top.

Morecambe have lost all three of their Cup matches against Premier League opposition while Chelsea have advanced from 35 of their last 36 ties in the competition against sides from a lower division.

02:58 PM GMT

Liverpool’s ‘world-class players’ too much, says Accrington manager

Speaking to the BBC, Accrington Stanley boss John Doolan said: “I enjoyed the opening 20 minutes.

“We wish we had a bit of luck, but they’re world-class players. To concede from a free kick and to counter like they do, you have to hold your hands up and take your punishment.

“You want a response and I thought the response was OK until you have a world-class player like Trent step up and put one in the top corner.

“We will lick our wounds and go again.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the players, fans and staff.

“It was massive and a big ask from us. When you give world-class players two yards, they can do what they do.”

02:52 PM GMT

Half-time: Leicester City 3 Queens Park Rangers 2

That goal was the last real action of the first half and QPR have suddenly got themselves back in this one for the second period after the game had looked to have got away from them.

02:49 PM GMT

GOAL! Kolli pulls one back for QPR

Leicester City 3 Queens Park Rangers 2 (Kolli) The visitors pull one back on the brink of half-time and maybe this game isn’t over just yet!

It’s Winks once again guilty of giving it away as he plays a sloppy back-pass which Kolli is able to latch on to before firing home.

02:48 PM GMT

Forest flying as Luton begin life without Edwards

High-flying Nottingham Forest take on Luton Town, who will be playing their first match since parting ways with manager Rob Edwards.

Despite the two sides finishing just one place apart in last season’s Premier League campaign, the difference in the club’s trajectories since May couldn’t be more stark with Forest sitting third in the Premier League while Luton hover above the relegation zone in the league below.

Edwards’ assistants Richie Kyle and Paul Trollope will be in charge of the team for today’s game. Can they kickstart their season this afternoon in what would be a big upset?

02:44 PM GMT

02:39 PM GMT

GOAL! Mavididi restores Leicester’s lead

Leicester City 2 Queens Park Rangers 1 (Mavididi) Ashby loses out as he looks to shepherd the ball out for the visitors allowing El Khannouss to break into the box before pulling it back for Mavididi who tucks home.

02:32 PM GMT

‘Shoulda, woulda, coulda’, says Bristol City boss

Speaking to the BBC, Bristol City manager Liam Manning said: “Tough game, conceding the goals early on made it a challenge. We were a little bit off. The intent was there but naturally if you play good players and you arrive a little bit late, you get opened up.

“I thought in the second half we controlled a lot without making many chances. We need to take the lesson from today and bounce into the league against Coventry.

“It’s a constant process, you have to get better and keep turning up. Today was a big lesson, we probably showed them too much respect early on.

“You want to turn up and give the best account of yourselves. We didn’t do that for 95 minutes.”

On Bristol City hitting the bar late on: “No idea how it doesn’t go in to be honest. But yeah, shoulda, woulda, coulda.

“We’re under no illusion we have a lot of work to do. But when you look at it, it wasn’t a huge gulf in the second half, and that was the most pleasing thing.”

For City, if not Wolves, this is an emotionally-charged fixture. In 2017-2018, the club had been going toe-to-toe with Wolves in a promotion battle, but never recovered such high-flying form after a 2-1 defeat to Wolves took the wind of their sales at Ashton Gate.

Accrington’s Liverpool fan

Accrington Stanley’s forward Josh Woods was in the Liverpool end at Wembley when the Merseyside team won the FA Cup in 2022 against Chelsea.

The boyhood Liverpool fan was in attendance at Anfield as recently as November as he saw  Arne Slot’s men dismantle Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

But this afternoon the 24-year-old will be taking to the pitch and looking to cause a major cup upset against his beloved side.

“When I go and watch Liverpool I always think to myself, ‘I’d love to play at Anfield one day’. Now it’s about to happen. Dreams do come true,” Woods told the BBC.

11:50 AM GMT

Birmingham’s unbeaten run against Lincoln

Birmingham are unbeaten in their last 18 meetings with Lincoln in all competitions in a run stretching all the way back to 1911.

The two sides’ only other meeting in the FA Cup came in 1969 where Birmingham came out 2-1 winners at St Andrew’s.

11:47 AM GMT

Fond memories for Wolves facing Bristol City

Wolves have won both of their previous FA Cup meetings with Bristol City, winning 1-0 in 2019 after winning by the same scoreline 46 years earlier.

They have also won in their last two visits to Bristol City in all competitions.

11:45 AM GMT

Odds stacked against Stanley

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 13 FA Cup third round clashes, having only been beaten by Wolves in the 2018/19 campaign in that run.

This is the first meeting between Liverpool and Accrington Stanley in all competitions but the visitors have lost all three of their FA Cup games against Premier League opponents.

They have, however, progressed from each of their last four FA Cup third round ties.

Arne Slot is wary of the threat posed by the visitors who will be ‘all up for’ a visit to Anfield to face a team 86 places above them in the Football League.

“It’s a special occasion for every team we face, but especially for a lower-league team,” said Slot.

“They will be all up for it. They’ve lived towards this game for weeks probably.

“If you go to a Champions League final, everybody is hyped up and ready and, for them, it is going to feel as if it is a Champions League final, so we have to be aware of that.

11:43 AM GMT

Liverpool team news

11:41 AM GMT

Potter took ‘encouragement’ from first match

West Ham were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round on Friday night in Graham Potter’s first match in charge.

Asked at full-time how he had felt ahead of kick-off, Potter said: “The emotions were excitement. Friday night, Villa Park, full house, 6,500 West Ham fans who were amazing.

“Our performance gave me a lot of encouragement, the way the players tried to do what we asked them to do. We’re just disappointed now because we’re out and wanted to go through.

“We just try to get the team into a good shape. The talent is there but it’s just about trying to get the team together as a collective. That’s what we’re trying to do.”

11:23 AM GMT

So far in the third round

The FA Cup third round kicked off on Thursday night as Everton’s players progressed past Peterborough United, just hours after learning of manager Sean Dyche’s departure.

Goals from Beto and Iliman Ndiaye were enough for Everton, led by Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman in the dugout, but Ashley Young still took to social media to say how “gutted” he was his son Tyler didn’t get on the pitch for the visitors.

Elsewhere on Thursday evening, Fulham put four past Watford at Craven Cottage to advance while Sheffield United were beaten 1-0 at home by Cardiff City.

Graham Potter had been in talks with Everton over the likely upcoming vacancy but was instead appointed manager of West Ham United this week following Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal.

Despite Potter’s tenure getting off to a dream start on Friday night as Lucas Paqueta gave West Ham a 1-0 lead after just nine minutes away against Aston Villa, Unai Emery’s side turned the tie on its head with two-second half goals to progress.

Friday’s other fixture saw League One’s Wycombe Wanderers upset Portsmouth of the Championship with a 2-0 home win.

Moyes appointed Everton manager for second time

David Moyes has today been appointed Everton manager for a second time following the sacking of Sean Dyche on Thursday.

The 61-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Goodison Park with Everton currently 16th in the Premier League - one point clear of the relegation zone.

Everton beat Peterborough United 2-0 in the FA Cup on Thursday, just hours after the news broke of Dyche’s departure, with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman managing the side.

Preview: Premier League’s elite join the party in FA Cup third round

Good morning and welcome to Telegraph Sport’s live, minute-by-minute clockwatch for the FA Cup third round with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City among those to feature in the 17 fixtures unfolding today.

Arne Slot’s Premier League leaders host League Two strugglers Accrington Stanley in one of the afternoon’s earlier ties before Morecambe travel to Stamford Bridge in one of eight 3pm kick-offs.

Man City, who were beaten by rivals Manchester United in last season’s FA Cup final, take on Salford City, owned by United’s infamous Class of 92, in one of the day’s later clashes.

Kicking off at the same time will be another of the standout match-ups as Harrogate Town, who are a couple of places below Accrington in England’s fourth tier, travel to Championship front-runners Leeds United for an all-Yorkshire affair.

Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bournemouth, Leicester City, Brentford, Brighton and Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest are the other Premier League outfits in action, with all six sides facing teams from the division below.

High-flying Forest take on Luton Town, who will be playing their first match since parting ways with manager Rob Edwards.

Despite the two sides finishing just one place apart in last season’s Premier League campaign, the difference in the club’s trajectories since May couldn’t be more stark with Forest sitting third in the Premier League while Luton hover above the relegation zone in the league below.

Another side fresh from sacking their manager were Everton but that didn’t halt their progress as they beat Peterborough United on Thursday with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman in the dugout after Sean Dyche’s departure.

The same could not be said for West Ham United though who fell to a 2-1 away defeat against Aston Villa on Friday night in Graham Potter’s first match in charge following Julen Lopetegui’s dismissal.

Villa became the third top-flight team to progress to the fourth round following Fulham’s win over Watford on Thursday.
