PORT Glasgow boss Tam Jamieson hailed the character of his side after they overcame a stubborn St Peter's side and a red card to move within four points of the league's summit.

A Shaun Rodgers double and a Dylan McLaughlin strike saw the Parklea side bring all three points back to Inverclyde, despite being reduced to ten men shortly before the half-time interval.

Veteran midfielder Chris Millar was given his marching orders for the first time in his career, but the Port showed their character and bounced back.

Rodgers had Port ahead before the break (Image: David Smith) Jamieson was pleased by the display from his side, who got over a slow start to get their noses in front through Rodgers' first half strike before coming out stronger in the second half following Millar's dismissal.

He told the Tele: "Before the game, we'd have taken a clean sheet and a 3-0, especially with Midge (Chris Millar) getting sent off so early on.

"I saw some good character in second half from the boys, which is pleasing. We asked for a wee bit more effort and a wee bit more character, which we got.

"St Peter's set up pretty well. I said before the game, they're young, they're going to have legs, effort and enthusiasm. They never really surprised us by making it hard for us.

"Don't get me wrong, Sam Murdoch made a good save, stopping a header. They also hit the bar just before half-time, and you think 'we could be getting in here a goal down, a man down as well'.

"I thought, over the course of it, they probably didn't start well, but it's just about getting it done professionally, which we did and we'll move on to BSC Glasgow now."

After riding an early storm after the break, Port looked much improved in the second half.

Rodgers finished off a move made in the depths of Cappielow, getting on the end of an Aidan Duffy cross to put his side in easy street.

Rodgers believes his side are picking up a head of steam at the right time of the season.

He added: "It was good to get a couple of goals, obviously I'm a bit gutted I didn't get three but I can't complain too much.

"It was hard, because we had 10 men for 45 minutes there, but I felt like we created enough chances to maybe get another one, but we'll take the three points and move on.

"The first half performance was alright, whilst we weren't great.

"We were in control of the game, but the gaffer gave us a wee bit at half time, and I think we were a better team in the second half.

"That's four wins in a row now, we've put a good wee run together.

"I think if we can turn up next week, it should take care of itself.

"We'll just take each game as it comes, and then worry about [league leaders] Knightswood when it comes along on February 22."
