TWO Port Glasgow martial artists have made a name for themselves on the big stage after scooping up silver medals at the Scottish Veterans Open Judo Championship.

Judo duo Jim McKelvie (68) and Billy McPherson (60), training out of Boglestone Judo Club in the town, headed the short distance down the coast to the Inverclyde National Training Centre in Largs earlier this month, and they didn't disappoint on home soil.

Jim navigated his way through a tough category in the M7/M8 +100kg group, whilst Billy, competing in his first major competition, was placed in the M7 -73kg category.

On his first showing on the big stage, it was a huge achievement for Billy to come away with an accolade and a worthy prize for his efforts on the day.
