France will take on Spain the semi-finals of Euro 2024 after clinching a penalty shootout victory over Portugal in their quarter-final clash in Hamburg.

That match was bereft of any attacking quality in the final third with both sides missing a plethora of chances as goalkeepers Mike Maignan and Diogo Costa proved their worth between the sticks. Maignan denying Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha from close range with Costa helping nullify the threat of Kylian Mbappe.

The teams could not be separated after 120 minutes and the match went down to a penalty shootout. Cristiano Ronaldo sank his first up for Portugal but the French were flawless. Joao Felix’s effort (third in the Portuguese line-up) struck the post to hand Les Bleus the advantage and a fabulous finish form Theo Hernandez sent them through as 5-3 winners.

Six and out. Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth and last European Championships came to an end as Portugal paid for an impotence that stemmed from affording their captain privileged status. They went out on penalties, Joao Felix rolling his spot kick against the foot of the post as everyone else scored, but after a second successive stalemate, after 364 minutes without scoring.

If it is an equally damning statistic that no France player has scored for them in open play this tournament, five did in a shootout. Diogo Costa had saved a trio of Slovenian spot kicks in the last 16 but Ousmane Dembele, Youssouf Fofana, Jules Kounde and Bradley Barcola all found the net, allowing Theo Hernandez to set up a superpower semi-final against Spain.

The ends can justify the means and for Didier Deschamps, dullness has brought a fourth semi-final in the last five major tournaments. In the process, France conquered a demon or two. Eliminated from Euro 2020 on penalties, losing the 2022 World Cup final in a shootout, France avoided an unwanted hat-trick. They also gained a modicum of revenge for their Euro 2016 final defeat to Portugal.

France reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 with a penalty-shootout victory over Portugal on Friday.

The heavyweight sides played out a 0-0 draw over 120 minutes in Hamburg, with the game improving as it went on after a dull start.

Still, neither team could produce a decisive moment, with Cristiano Ronaldo largely anonymous and Kylian Mbappe being replaced in extra time, having suffered some irritation with his protective mask.

Joao Felix missed for Portugal in the shootout to hand France the advantage, and Theo Hernandez capitalised to send Les Bleus into the final four – where Spain await on Tuesday (9 July).

The Selecao started the tournament in unconvincing fashion, squeezing past the Czech Republic 2-1 in their opener. They convincingly beat Turkey in their second game, before losing 2-0 to Georgia in their final game, having already qualified.

Their lasst-q6 game was a similarly torrid affair at times, with a 0-0 draw eventually being saved by Diogo Costa, who saved three penalties in a row to send his side through to the last eight.

Like Portugal, France have also been unconvincing at times. They beat Austria 1-0 thanks to an own goal, before drawing 0-0 to the Netherlands when they could well have lost.

Portugal and France have faced off a total of 28 times, with fixtures dating as far back as 1926. In fact, the two teams had met 16 times before their first competitive meeting – a 3-2 win for France at the semi-final stage of Euro 1984, with the winner coming courtesy of Michel Platini.

Their second competitive meeting came at the same stage of Euro 2000, and once again the French ran out as winners, this time due to a 117th-minute golden goal penalty from Zinedine Zidane.

The 2006 World Cup saw another semi-final meeting between these two sides, and once again France won – Zidane again, with another penalty to break Portuguese hearts.

Portugal were certainly due some revenge, and it eventually arrived at the final of Euro 2016, when a much-fancied France team lost 1-0 thanks to an extra-time winner from Eder.

With Belgium sat deep, France struggled mightily to create clear chances despite controlling the contest, flashing a series of finishes wide and high but never looking particularly likely to break through.

But they finally struck five minutes from time, Randal Kolo Muanireleasing a shot at the end of a fluent passing move that took a healthy piece of Vertonghen’s knee to beat Koen Casteels in the Belgian goal.

Despite a French player still being yet to score from open play in Germany, Didier Deschamps’ side move on, while Belgium bow out after another major tournament disappointment.
