Portugal vs France LIVE! Euro 2024 result, match stream and latest updates after penalty shootout today

Portugal vs France LIVE!

France defender Theo Hernandez struck the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout win against Portugal to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

Joao Felix missed for Portugal during the shootout which came after the match finished 0-0 following extra-time.

Both teams missed a string of chances in 120 minutes of open play at the Volksparkstadion, the best chance falling to Cristiano Ronaldo in the first period of extra time when he skied over from close range.

France's Kylian Mbappe looked uncomfortable in a mask he was wearing for a broken nose and was substituted during extra time.

France will play Spain in Munich on Tuesday for a chance to reach the July 14 final.

Tears for Pepe

22:56 , Marc Mayo

Cristiano Ronaldo consoling Pepe on the pitch, the 41-year-old is in tears as he embraces his teammate.

What a competitor Pepe is, he played superbly tonight. Ronaldo had zero service and couldn’t influence the game at all as a result, there will be questions of Roberto Martinez for sure.

Watch the decisive penalty

Theo Hernandez stood tall when the pressure was highest to book France’s spot in the final four.

Diogo Costa, who saved every penalty against Slovenia, didn’t get near any of them tonight!

We bid farewell to Toni Kroos earlier and now Cristiano Ronaldo departs the European Championship for the final time.

No tears tonight, he looks on pensive as France celebrate.

FULL TIME!

22:29 , Marc Mayo

Penalty shootout required. It has felt inevitable for a long time.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 120 mins

22:29 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Nuno Mendes does brilliantly to launch a break and he gets it back from Bernardo Silva... straight at the keeper!

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 119 mins

22:27 , Marc Mayo

Now France’s turn to swing a corner in and same result! Dayot Upamecano fancied an overhead kick from the knockdown but gives away a foul.

Vitinha off for Matheus Nunes. Surely a penalty-oriented sub.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 117 mins

22:25

An error at the back from N’Golo Kante and Portugal force a corner.

Vitinha’s out-swinger is eyed up by Cristiano Ronaldo for something acrobatic but all he does is foul Dayot Upamecano.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 115 mins

22:23 , Marc Mayo

Same story for France, lovely jinking run by Bradley Barcola before he loses all composure in the box and oddly chips his shot off target.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 112 mins

22:20 , Marc Mayo

Superb control by Ousmane Dembele and a neat run towards the D, before a wild shot over the bar.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 111 mins

22:19 , Marc Mayo

Cristiano Ronaldo for the first time tonight, it feels like, goes on a run of his own into the box but the flag is up as Theo Hernandez slides in well.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 108 mins

22:16 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Like-for-like swaps from both teams there to replace their left wingers.

Still, a noticeable lack of pace in the game before Portugal try to leap into an attack.

Francisco Conceicao picks out Joao Felix with a deep cross... side netting!

Kick-off!

22:13 , Marc Mayo

Penalties loom large in this game so let’s see who can provide a moment of magic (or a massive error) to win it.

France bring Kylian Mbappe off! He applies some ice to his broken nose, which got bashed earlier, and on comes Bradley Barcola.

No such luxuries for Cristiano Ronaldo, mind. It’s Rafael Leao off for Joao Felix as Roberto Martinez makes a change.

 (AFP via Getty Images)
(AFP via Getty Images)

Half-time!

22:09 , Marc Mayo

Naturally the pace has been pretty low for the majority of extra-time.

Nuno Mendes provides a burst forward and Francisco Conceicao curls over from 20 yards.

And that’s half-time in extra-time!

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 102 mins

22:06

CHANCE!

France can’t clear a cross and Rafael Leao’s shot is closed down at close range! Vital interception.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 98 mins

22:02 , Marc Mayo

Marcus Thuram sums up the evening somewhat with a wild shot from inside the D, well off target. There’s been very little quality in the execution for both attacks tonight.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 97 mins

22:01 , Marc Mayo

Ousmane Dembele palms off Nuno Mendes to spark a counter and beats a challenge before opting to find Kylian Mbappe...

Pepe blocks the shot! Dembele should have shot, really.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 94 mins

21:57 , Marc Mayo

Cristiano Ronaldo pops up in the box for his moment... and skies a shot well over the bar!

Francisco Conceicao does really well to hit the byline and cut it back but that is a poor, tired finish from Ronaldo.

Portugal 0-0 France | Extra-time: 92 mins

21:56 , Marc Mayo

Not much of an atmosphere in Hamburg, it has to be said. A bit of a draining encounter for all involved.

Portugal 0-0 France | Kick-off!

21:54 , Marc Mayo

Extra-time it is. Penalties may well be required in this Euro 2024 quarter-final.

Let’s find out!

Extra-time coming up

21:54

Michael Oliver calls in Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo for a fresh coin toss as the two teams undertake huddles and receive some treatment.

Youssouf Fofana is coming on for France. Eduardo Camavinga off.

21:52 , Marc Mayo

That’s now 334 minutes since Portugal last scored a goal and France still haven’t scored an open-play goal of their own at Euro 2024.

Les Bleus also haven’t fallen behind and Portugal are on course for a third clean sheet in four games.

Who doesn’t want another half hour on this!?

 (AP)
(AP)

Full time!

21:49 , Marc Mayo

Ousmane Dembele launches a French break and tees up Kylian Mbappe... he picks out the far corner in a bid to steal the headlines - easily held by the keeper!

To extra-time we go...

Portugal 0-0 France | 90+2 mins

21:48 , Marc Mayo

Joao Palhinha off for Ruben Neves as Portugal add a little extra technical nous to their midfield.

Portugal 0-0 France | 90 mins

21:47 , Marc Mayo

William Saliba’s header clear doesn’t go far enough and he has to throw his body at Bernardo Silva’s shot.

France break and Pepe does excellently to go toe-to-toe with Marcus Thuram and make a sharp tackle in the box.

Three minutes added on.

Portugal 0-0 France | 88 mins

21:44 , Marc Mayo

France break and N’Golo Kante drills one in from range... held by Diogo Costa.

Portugal 0-0 France | 87 mins

21:43 , Marc Mayo

Marcus Thuram on for Randal Kolo Muani in a change up front for France before they defend a corner.

Another useless Portuguese set-piece delivery is cleared. You do actually have to feel for Cristiano Ronaldo, he’s had absolutely no service from these positions.

Portugal 0-0 France | 86 mins

21:41 , Marc Mayo

Cristiano Ronaldo is over it, but you’d fancy a left-footer from this angle. Surely..?

He smacks it into the wall.

Thought so.

Portugal 0-0 France | 84 mins

21:40 , Marc Mayo

Great work by Francisco Conceicao draws a foul off William Saliba on the edge of the box, and a yellow card.

France wanted a foul in the build-up but were rightly waved off.

Conceicao needs a bit of treatment to his face before the free-kick.

Portugal 0-0 France | 83 mins

21:38

This quarter-final has dropped back a couple of notches in pace as Portugal get a better grip on the ball and France struggle to create on the counter.

Extra-time is not far away...

Portugal 0-0 France | 80 mins

21:36 , Marc Mayo

Looked like Joao Palhinha got the ball, and he did, but a stern challenge on Kylian Mbappe concedes a free-kick, earns a booking and that’s a one-game ban. Harsh.

Portugal 0-0 France | 79 mins

21:35 , Marc Mayo

A spell in response now from Portugal and they win a corner down the right wing.

Bernardo Silva assumes set-piece duties and Mike Maignan punches well.

Portugal 0-0 France | 74 mins

21:30 , Marc Mayo

Ousmane Dembele allowed to drift casually in from the right flank and he whips a left-footer just wide of the far post.

Good time for Portuguese changes and off go Joao Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes.

Portugal 0-0 France | 73 mins

21:29 , Marc Mayo

Two changes being readied by Portugal, Francisco Conceicao and Nelson Semedo.

Portugal 0-0 France | 70 mins

21:26 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

A bit more spark about Portugal in particular now, France have gone to a more straightforward 4-3-3 with the substitution.

N’Golo Kante opts not to play Ousmane Dembele in down the right despite it being a good chance to break for Les Bleus.

They come forward anyway eventually and the ball lands to Eduardo Camavinga on the edge of the six-yard box... he slashes wide!

Portugal 0-0 France | 67 mins

21:22 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

France’s turn now as Randal Kolo Muani keeps a loose pass alive and exchanges passes with Jules Kounde.

A lovely dink sends him through and he rifles a volley into a good block, which bounces the shot wide!

Antoine Griezmann now off for Ousmane Dembele. A bit of pace as the game opens up.

Portugal 0-0 France | 63 mins

21:19 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Portugal once again come close, Rafael Leao down the left feeds Vitinha.

Unmarked in the box, he fires straight at Mike Maignan and Cristiano Ronaldo fails to spin it home from a tight angle.

Portugal 0-0 France | 62 mins

21:17

CHANCE!

Portugal create their best opening of the night as Bruno Fernandes darts into the box and has a shot saved low down, good work by Mike Maignan.

Joao Cancelo played the pass and pops up to shoot moments later, curling wide on his left foot.

Portugal 0-0 France | 60 mins

21:15 , Marc Mayo

An hour gone without a Portugal shot on target. Both of France’s have been from distance and were straight at Diogo Costa.

If this game goes to extra-time, we’re only halfway through...

Rafael Leao tries to change that with a pacey dart and Eduardo Camavinga slides in intelligently in his own box.

Corner. Rubbish. Cleared.

Portugal 0-0 France | 58 mins

21:14

Kylian Mbappe back in the game and nursing his nose, which must have been tender before the ball clocked him square in the face.

Portugal 0-0 France | 56 mins

21:11 , Marc Mayo

A sixth corner of the game for Portugal and first of this half, can they finally put in a good delivery?

Smartly dinked deep by Bruno Fernandes and France half clear before the keeper flaps at the second ball in.

France then break and Antoine Griezmann’s run is ended.

The yellow card is out but only because it fell out of Michael Oliver’s pocket...

Meanwhile, play is stopped because Kylian Mbappe is on the deck in his own six-yard box. The header from the corner pinged right off his face.

Portugal 0-0 France | 51 mins

21:06 , Marc Mayo

Portugal penalty appeals turned down as Nuno Mendes goes down in the box! Looked like the ball had gone at the very least.

In fact, the replays show that is a straight-up dive.

Portugal 0-0 France | 50 mins

21:06 , Marc Mayo

Kylian Mbappe tries a little give-and-go with N’Golo Kante and fires off an effort on target after getting the ball back - but it’s straight at the keeper.

Portugal 0-0 France | 48 mins

21:04 , Marc Mayo

Don’t expect a second half drastically different from the first, we’ve already had a poor Portugal cross evade Cristiano Ronaldo after a steady build-up.

Kick-off!

21:01 , Marc Mayo

No changes from either side as we get going once again in Hamburg, for the right to lose to- I mean play Spain in Tuesday’s first semi-final.

Not much doing for France either

20:57 , Marc Mayo

Didier Deschamps’ struggles in finding his best attacking line-up have been on full display here.

Randal Kolo Muani had probably the best opening but lacked sharpness as his opportunity to pass and then his attempt to create space to shoot both passed him by.

As a spectacle, you’d describe that 45 minutes as average - if you’re being kind.

Portugal not getting Cristiano Ronaldo into the game

20:50 , Marc Mayo

Just 11 touches for Cristiano Ronaldo in that half and none in the French box. Portugal have got into decent positions but their delivery has been woeful.

Half-time!

20:45 , Marc Mayo

No added time needed for that. We’re goalless.

Portugal 0-0 France | 45 mins

20:44 , Marc Mayo

A bit of applause from the crowd after a neat Cristiano Ronaldo flick carries the ball out of a crowd.

Not much else to get the neutral excited as the half-time break looms.

Portugal 0-0 France | 42 mins

20:42 , Marc Mayo

Free-kick Portugal as Randal Kolo Muani makes a lumbering striker’s challenge on Vitiniha, just over 25 yards out and to the left of the D as Cristiano Ronaldo looks at it.

Of course, it is he who is lining this one up...

Bruno Fernandes instead pops up to shoot over the bar.

Looked like Ronaldo was also caught by surprise there, he was just winding up to shoot!

Portugal 0-0 France | 39 mins

20:38 , Marc Mayo

An audible cry of frustration from Kylian Mbappe as he slips a crafty through ball in behind the defensive line, and it goes straight out of play.

Not much has come off for either team in this first half, in fact not much has really been attempted either.

Portugal 0-0 France | 36 mins

20:36 , Marc Mayo

Well dealt with by William Saliba as Bruno Fernandes gives Cristiano Ronaldo one to chase, which the French defender muscles through effortlessly.

France on top a bit here, Jules Kounde aims a low cross which Pepe clears.

Portugal 0-0 France | 32 mins

20:31 , Marc Mayo

A neat interchange between Kylian Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani, and Antoine Griezmann breaks in behind to pick up a pass that... doesn’t come.

Kolo Muani hesitates, tries to create space to shoot and Pepe mops him up.

(Getty Images)

Portugal 0-0 France | 28 mins

20:28 , Marc Mayo

Good work by Rafael Leao down the left to beat Jules Kounde and win a corner.

Bruno Fernandes’ deliveries have been poor to this point and he goes short this time. Whipped in from a deeper position, it’s cleared and France’s break reaches Kylian Mbappe...

Cut back, Antoine Griezmann’s shot is blocked before Eduardo Camavinga lashes over.

Portugal 0-0 France | 27 mins

20:26 , Marc Mayo

Portugal’s passing accuracy is at 96 per cent so far, which tells you something about how safe a lot of their play has been. One shot apiece, only France’s being on target.

Portugal 0-0 France | 25 mins

20:25 , Marc Mayo

Pepe sends Eduardo Camavinga to the turf near the Portuguese corner flag and France can load the box...

Decent ball yet Cristiano Ronaldo nods clear.

Portugal 0-0 France | 24 mins

20:23 , Marc Mayo

A short pause as Cristiano Ronaldo has bumped his head under pressure from Theo Hernandez. Just a coming together while going for the ball, he’ll continue.

Portugal 0-0 France | 23 mins

20:22 , Marc Mayo

A bit of pressure from Les Bleus with a first moment of class from Kylian Mbappe to beat his man, and his cross is cleared.

Still lacking a bit of killer quality from both teams, though.

Portugal 0-0 France | 20 mins

20:20 , Marc Mayo

A decent chance to counter from France after a corner is cleared upfield and Joao Palhinha messes up a simply interception chance.

Theo Hernandez has a whack from 30 yards and Diogo Costa can only parry it! Portugal clear as Randal Kolo Muani lurks.

Portugal 0-0 France | 17 mins

20:16 , Marc Mayo

Bruno Fernandes winds one up from distance and wins a corner off William Saliba’s deflection.

A third corner in a short spell is also cleared at the near post and France get the foul.

Portugal 0-0 France | 16 mins

20:15 , Marc Mayo

Unforced error from Mike Maignan as he controls in the face of Cristiano Ronaldo hands Portugal a corner...

Bruno Fernandes need a better delivery if he wants to punish it but Maignan rises with authority to claim.

Kylian Mbappe is sent on the counter, but Joao Cancelo is there to mop up.

Portugal 0-0 France | 12 mins

20:12 , Marc Mayo

Slick play by Rafael Leao to set Nuno Mendes free on the left but the backheel is all for nothing, as the cross evades Cristiano Ronaldo.

No blows landed yet but Portugal just edging it.

Portugal 0-0 France | 11 mins

20:10 , Marc Mayo

Weak Bruno Fernandes free-kick spins off Jules Kounde to nonetheless win the game’s first corner.

The in-swinger from the Manchester United man is also awful and hacked clear at the near post.

Portugal 0-0 France | 8 mins

20:08 , Marc Mayo

A longer spell of Portuguese possession now.

Quite the contrast to the fluid quarter-final we’ve just watched with two well-drilled, rigid defences happy to let their opponent knock it around in non-threatening areas.

Portugal 0-0 France | 5 mins

20:04 , Marc Mayo

A first chance for Portugal to get on the ball after some early French pressure, Didier Deschamps said to expect a war of attrition yesterday but Rafael Leao with all of his pace is trying to break this one open with a crowbar.

In comes the cross, cleared.

Bernardo Silva clips one towards Cristiano Ronaldo, also dealt with.

Antoine Griezmann in that floating role behind the two French strikers of Kylian Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani, with Mbappe the more left-sided of the duo.

Kylian Mbappe gives verdict on Cristiano Ronaldo

19:49 , Marc Mayo

France striker Kylian Mbappe wants to be one of a kind at Real Madrid and not viewed as the successor to the Bernabeu's last great superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal forward spent nine years in the Spanish capital, breaking all kinds of records before his departure in 2018, and the arrival of Mbappe this summer is viewed in the same bracket in terms of a high-profile player signing at his peak.

"I think it is about appreciation rather than envy, what he was, what he is," said Mbappe.

"I like to admire the great player, there will never be another Cristiano Ronaldo. He has shaped football and has inspired generations.

"I am following my own path; my dream of playing at Real Madrid is becoming a reality but I'm not going to write the next chapter of Cristiano's story.

"I hope I will be one of a kind at Real Madrid but it will be different.

"His CV speaks for itself and I have total respect for him but I hope tomorrow he is not as happy as it is us going to the semi-finals."

Roberto Martinez keeps the faith

19:13 , Marc Mayo

Portugal have a very useful thing at this Euros: a settled starting line-up.

Unchanged are the Selecao for today’s game.

Cristiano Ronaldo up front with Rafael Leao offering pace down the right, Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes the creators, and Vitinha with Joao Palhinha providing the muscle in the middle.

Not entirely sure why they think announcing the XI with a clip of someone flicking through a phone is they way to go, but hey ho.

Didier Deschamps predicts war of attrition

18:35 , Marc Mayo

France coach Didier Deschamps predicted a power struggle against Portugal for a place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

"At the start of the tournament, Portugal were one of the favourites and they're a team with a legitimate right with regard to their ambition to be European champions," Deschamps told a press conference on Thursday.

"The match is going to be a power struggle. It's as simple as that. The Portuguese team has the capacity to keep possession of the ball, and obviously likes to attack rather than defend. So it will be a power struggle."

He continued: "We saw the Netherlands when they played against us were a lot more cautious than they tend to be. The same can be said about Belgium. So maybe Portugal will also have the same attitude.

"I know their coach Roberto Martinez likes to shake up his formation; sometimes it's three at the back, sometimes he throws in that extra defender. If you have any inside information you can share, I'm all ears!"

Portugal back Cristiano Ronaldo after tearful response

18:27 , Marc Mayo

Cristiano Ronaldo's breakdown after missing a penalty for Portugal was a reminder that footballers are human too despite their elevated status, teammate Bernardo Silva has said.

Ronaldo's tears after his failure from the spot, with the score at 0-0 against Slovenia in their Euro 2024 last-16 game, brought criticism from some fans and pundits of self-importance.

“We're humans and he felt emotional when he missed a penalty,” said Silva.

“It's acceptable, isn’t it? Sometimes you react in ways you don’t expect... he felt he could have done better in that moment.

“He cries for a bit, which is how humans deal with emotions sometimes. So I don’t see any reason for people to discuss about it, but obviously people will, because that’s the business.”

Portugal vs France | Score prediction

17:36 , Marc Mayo

Neither team have truly convinced at the tournament so far, so it really is all to play for on Friday night.

A France player is yet to score from open play after four games, relying on one penalty and two own goals thus far, and the Selecao defence, including Pepe, is proving a tough nut to crack.

Portugal will pose a bigger threat than any team France have faced so far and, unless Didier Deschamps can get Les Bleus firing, they face an early exit.

Both squads have talent in abundance, but only one have shown even flashes of brilliance.

Portugal to win, after extra time.
