Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says a late move for a striker during the transfer window is 'always possible' as he looks to give his side a transfer boost ahead of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle United.

The Gunners travel to St James's Park looking to overturn a two-goal deficit after the first leg. Eddie Howe's side have the advantage as they look to seal a second trip to Wembley in three seasons.

Arsenal's hopes of reaching Wembley had appeared to have been dashed by serious injuries to forwards Gabriel Jesus and Bakayo Saka, along with their forwards struggling for form. However, they received a huge boost with a monster 5-1 win over Premier League champions Manchester City on Sunday, with the likes of Kai Havertz hitting form.

It has potentially alleviated the need for a new forward, but Arteta insists he is still looking to add a top-class attacker before tonight's 11pm transfer deadline. A bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins was unsuccessful, while they have also been linked constantly with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Asked if there will be a move before Monday’s transfer deadline, Arteta said: "I don't know. I have been focused in the last 24 hours on what we had to do to try to beat Man City. Now we have done it, ok, we will discuss the situation as we always do, then Newcastle, that’s the important thing.

"It's about intentions, and the intention, I think we have been very clear from every angle of what we want to do. And the other is the reality and what you are able to do. It’s always possible."

Bayern Munich forward Tel remains a possibility, with the 19-year-old linked with a string of Premier League clubs. A move to Man United appears to have been scuppered, while Tel himself turned down a £50m transfer to Spurs after holding talks with their chairman Daniel Levy.

It leaves Arsenal at the front of the queue to sign the player. If he does join, he could make his debut at St James' Park on Wednesday night.
