Praise for County Durham local league cricketer and 'lovely guy' on Test Match debut
A County Durham cricket coach has praised the talent of an overseas professional at a local league cricket club who has made an impact at the highest level of the game.
Fast bowler Kashif Ali has made his Test Match debut for Pakistan - and took a wicket on his first day at the weekend.
The 22-year-old spent last summer with Willington Cricket Club in the North East Premier League (NEPL) side, taking wickets for fun.
During his time with the County Durham side, he took 31 wickets in 13 games, including standout figures of 5/44 in one match.
On Saturday (January 25), Ali was selected to make his test debut for Pakistan against the West Indies, taking a wicket on his debut.
Willington Cricket Club's director of cricket, Karl Brown, who was influential in bringing Kashif to the club, said: "When I first watched Kashif bowl I knew straightaway he had an outstanding talent.
"He carried out his duties at the club with a great deal of professionalism and enthusiasm.
"A lovely guy with a beautiful family. He deserves this opportunity at the highest level and from all at Willington Cricket Club we send our congratulations and best wishes.''
