This time last year Doug King effectively ordered Mark Robins to take the FA Cup seriously, insisting he wanted a Coventry City cup run rather than the competition being used to give key players a rest and minutes to those who hadn’t played as much.

The former Sky Blues boss duly obliged and ultimately delivered another memorable day out at Wembley when the club was denied a place in the final by the most ridiculous of VAR outcomes in the history of technology brought in to attempt to get vital match decisions right.

What happened next, of course, was that City’s incredible cup exploits resulted in the players running out of steam, and the club’s play-off ambitions bit the dust. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see whether King makes similar demands of new boss Frank Lampard or whether he’ll be more relaxed about the situation.

From the outside looking in, one would have thought the owner will leave it up to his new head coach to decide and, like most managers, attempt to pick a team against Sheffield Wednesday that strikes a balance between giving peripheral players vital match minutes and being strong enough to get through to the next round.

The goalkeeper situation is an interesting position this time around. Lampard knows all he needs to know about Brad Collins from his first few games in charge, and having recalled Oliver Dovin he may well be keen to stick with the Swede, who appears to be growing with confidence in every game. It might have been an ideal game for the new boss to take a look at Ben Wilson had he been fit, but it looks as though the experienced stopper is still not ready for a return.

Moving to the back four – assuming Lampard reverts to his preferred defensive line after going with three and wing-backs at Norwich – it’s likely that Milan van Ewijk will be deployed at right-back, given that he’s City’s only recognised senior player for the position, while it would make sense to stick Jay Dasilva back in on the left to give Jake Bidwell a rest.

As for the central defensive pairing, Liam Kitching acquitted himself well at Carrow Road in his first game under Lampard, and it would make sense for him to get another 90 minutes in his legs. Luis Binks hasn’t played for a while, so he also needs game time. But playing both would mean a lack of balance with two left footers in the centre-back berths, so maybe one will have to be content to come off the bench at some stage. There is, meanwhile, a strong argument to pair Bobby Thomas and Kitching, given how well they played together last season in a bid to see if they can rekindle their partnership.

With Ben Sheaf picking up a calf strain last time out it’s unlikely he’ll be risked even if he has recovered. That being the case, Josh Eccles and Victor Torp are the obvious choices for the deeper midfield roles, while Jamie Allen is likely to get another game after impressing his new boss at the weekend. The versatile midfielder also needs match minutes after limited game time this season.

Looking at City’s attacking options, this is a perfect game for Ellis Simms to return to the starting line-up and attempt to get himself a bit of confidence in front of goal. It would also appear to be an ideal opportunity for Lampard to take a look at Fabio Tavares, possibly in a wide position, while Raphael might also come into his thinking. Whether the Australian winger is ready to start a game, however, remains to be seen, but you’d like to think the summer signing would get more than just a few minutes at the end on this occasion.

Brandon Thomas-Asante is another player desperately short on confidence and this could, again, be an opportunity for the former West Brom striker to attempt to get his season up and running, although that may have to be out wide rather than leading the line, given the importance of playing Simms. Jack Rudoni, meanwhile, is another option on the left in the continued absence of the injured Ephron Mason-Clark and Haji Wright.

Predicted Coventry City team to face Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup: Oliver Dovin; Milan van Ewijk, Bobby Thomas, Liam Kitching, Jay Dasilva; Josh Eccles, Victor Torp; Fabio Tavares, Jamie Allen, Thomas-Asante; Ellis Simms.
