Premier League confirm huge referee decision after Chelsea vs Bournemouth VAR controversy
Premier League referee Rob Jones has been handed another assignment for the upcoming weekend after his role at the heart of Chelsea's 2-2 with Bournemouth on Tuesday. The official was in the spotlight when he chose against sending off David Brooks for an -off-the-ball collision with Marc Cucurella.
Despite being sent to a pitchside review by VAR, Jones only issued a yellow card to Brooks, going against standard procedure. He is the first referee to do so this season and the incident angered Enzo Maresca.
Although Chelsea managed to earn a late draw thanks to Reece James' stoppage time equaliser, the Brooks-Cucucrella moment occurred with the score level. Maresca can argue that his side would have had a much better chance to take back control of proceedings had Jones produced a red card.

"I've said many times, for me, when there is no intention to take the ball, it's a red," Maresca said. "They have to explain. If they give a yellow, that means something has happened. How can they judge that it was not dangerous? You cannot judge that's not dangerous.
"The intention is just to go against Marc Cucurella. In my opinion, it's a red. Hopefully, we can be more lucky with the referee in the future."
Brooks blocked the path of Cucurella as he rushed forward to spark a counter-attack, bringing him down after firm contact with his arm. The decision was explained online via the Premier League's Match Centre account, which said, "the referee deemed that the challenge on Cucurella was a reckless action and not violent conduct - and issued a yellow card to Brooks."
Perhaps fortunately for Chelsea, Jones will not be on hand for their next league game. That comes at home to Wolves on Monday. The league have confirmed that Simon Hooper will be the man in the middle for that, whilst Matt Donohue and Dan Cook are at Stockley Park on VAR duty.
As for Jones, he will be fourth official at Old Trafford for Manchester United's clash against Brighton. Jones will not oversee a match as the main official this weekend.
