The Premier League have released a statement - relating to VAR - following a disallowed goal for Brighton in their Sunday afternoon showdown with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United went into the game looking for a better performance than on Thursday night when the team looked to be falling to defeat against bottom-of-the-table Southampton, before a late Amad hat-trick gave them a valuable 3-1 win against their south coast visitors.

But the Brighton meeting didn't start as planned. United were trailing 1-0 against the Seagulls at Old Trafford after Yankuba Minteh's fifth minute tap-in. Bruno Fernandes had the chance to draw Ruben Amorim's team level - in the 23rd-minute - when the referee pointed to the spot.

Referee Peter Bankes awarded a penalty kick after Joshua Zirkzee was dragged down inside the area. The decision was checked by VAR with it concluding that the correct decision was made on-field.

United captain Fernandes made no mistake from the spot, sending the Brighton goalkeeper the wrong way and making the score 1-1.

VAR were also involved in the second half - after Brighton thought that they had re-taken the lead through Joao Pedro - but upon review it was recommended that the referee went over to his pitch-side monitor.

Replays showed a foul from Jan Paul van Hecke on Diogo Dalot in the build-up to the goal. The referee then took the decision to disallow the would-be goal.

Writing on X (was Twitter), the Premier League Match Centre account explained the decision.

"The referee's call of goal was checked by VAR, who deemed there was a foul by van Hecke on Dalot in the build-up and recommended an on-field review," it read. "The referee overturned the original decision, and that goal was disallowed."

The reprieve didn't last long for United, however, with Brighton then making it 2-1 just a few minutes later. Kaoru Mitoma giving the Seagulls the lead in the 60th-minute, while Georginio Rutter made it 3-1.
