The Premier League have released a statement explaining why the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) didn't overturn the decision to award Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly a straight red card against Wolves.

The Gunners Academy graduate was given his marching orders by referee Michael Oliver with just two minutes of normal time remaining of the first half after his challenge on Matt Doherty. Lewis-Skelly brought down the Wolves man has he started to break out of his own penalty area with the ball.

The referee quickly reached for his pocket and showed a red card for the challenge. And it's now been confirmed that the red card was for serious foul play - and not for the denial of a goal scoring opportunity.

That decision was checked by VAR in Stockley Park, but it was deemed that a clear and obvious error hadn't been made. The Premier League's Match Centre X (was Twitter) account have now released a statement on the incident.

"The referee's call of a red card for Lewis-Skelly was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his challenge to have been serious foul play," it read.

The decision means that not only will Arsenal be without Lewis-Skelly for the second half of their clash vs Wolves, but he will also face a suspension for upcoming games. Arsenal could appeal the decision, though, and get the ban overturned if that appeal is successful.

It's not the first time that Oliver has sent-off an Arsenal player in controversial circumstances. The referee showed Leandro Trossard a second yellow card for delaying the restart against Manchester City in September.
