The Premier League have released a statement explaining why Aston Villa’s goal against Wolves was disallowed.

With Villa 1-0 down at half time, Unai Emery’s side thought that they had equalised in the second half through Donyell Malen. Celebrations were cut short by the assistant referees flag.

Despite VAR showing both John McGinn, who crossed the ball for Malen, and Malen being in an onside position, the goal was still ruled out due to Morgan Rogers being in an offside position. The VAR concluded that he impacted the Wolves defender while the ball was played to McGinn.

Writing on their official X account, the Premier League Match Centre explained: "The referees call of no goal due to an offside offence is checked and confirmed by VAR – with Rogers in an offside position and deemed to be impacting the ability of Semedo to play or challenge for the ball."

A few minutes later, there was another VAR check for a potential Wolves penalty, but it was deemed that Malen got the ball. The natural wide man was forced to play up front for the second half of the game following injury to Ollie Watkins in the first half, it comes just days after Villa confirmed the sale of Jhon Duran to Saudi side Al Nassr for £65 million.

The decision to disallow the goal was questioned by Sky Sports' co-commentator Don Goodman. He said on the TV coverage of the game:

"This is soft. Look at Morgan Rogers, blocks there from an offside position but doesn't actually make any contact.

"Doesn't look to me like he's impeded him. This [angle] will be better. This will be clear. He hasn't impeded him at all. This is controversial."
