The Premier League have explained why Tosin Adarabioyo's goal for Chelsea against Wolves was allowed to stand.

The Blues were facing Wolves in the Monday Night Football clash in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge and went into the game in the back of a draw with Bournemouth in their previous fixture. Adarabioyo provided the finish from close range after a deflected Reece James effort found the Chelsea defender just outside the six-yard box.

The effort was initially ruled out for offside by the assistant referee and went to a VAR check. Matt Donohue, who was on video assistant referee duty, checked the decision and confirmed that Adarabioyo was onside and the goal was allowed to stand.

Moments after the goal was given, the Premier League released an official statement via their Match Centre account explaining the decision.

"The referee’s call of no goal was checked by VAR, who determined that Tosin was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded," the statement read.

The strike from Adarabioyo was his first in a Chelsea shirt in the Premier League since his move from Fulham as a free agent last summer. The game was the defender's 19th appearance in all competitions this season and just an 11th in the Premier League.

Adarabioyo was joined by Trevoh Chalobah at the heart of the defence against Wolves. Chalobah spent the first half of the season on loan at Crystal Palace, but returned to Chelsea earlier this month following injuries to Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Levi Colwill in recent weeks.

Romeo Lavia, Enzo Fernandez and Omari Kellyman also missed Chelsea's clash against Wolves due to injury on Monday night.
