Everton was denied a dramatic late penalty in its draw with Manchester United at Goodison Park. The home side led 2-0 at the break as David Moyes seemed on course for another win.

Beto continued his hot streak by firing past Andre Onana before Abdoulaye Doucoure capitalized to nod home, after Onana had denied Jack Harrison. United were particularly below par in the first half but were much improved after the break.

Bruno Fernandes got one back with a fine free-kick before Manuel Ugarte leveled the scores with an effort from the edge of the area. The visitors then looked more likely to go on and claim the three points before the late drama.

Everton was awarded a penalty by referee Andy Madley when Ashley Young was felled in the box having seemingly been pulled back by Matthijs de Ligt. However, the VAR intervened and the initial decision was overturned.

The statement read: "VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young and deemed that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with an indirect free-kick."

Everton players and fans were incensed at the final whistle as referee Andy Madley was surrounded. The point does little for either side's ambitions in the bottom half of the table.

Speaking on the incident, Moyes said: "I have had a look and undoubtedly he pulls his jersey. The on-field decision looked correct and I am surprised he was asked to go to VAR. When that happens, it is as if those who watch it understand more than the referee on the field.

"We had chances to make it three. The goal gave United momentum and it is a good side. A point isn't the worst result but it feels disappointing after being 2-0 up.

"Bruno got on the ball more and we found that more difficult to deal with. To go in 2-0 was great but it is always a dangerous position to be in."
