Arsenal have struggled with their squad depth at times this season, so Mikel Arteta may be tempted to delve into the January transfer market in the new year.

This season hasn't gone exactly as planned so far for Arsenal, with the Gunners slightly off the pace in the Premier League title race as we approach the new year. Mikel Arteta's side have also dealt with a fair share of injury problems so far this season, and with the January transfer window around the corner, a few new faces may be something that Arsenal need.

As always, a new attacker is supposedly on the Gunners' radar heading into the transfer window, while Arteta's side may be tempted to bring another defender to the club. So, if Arsenal were to make some signings in the January transfer window, who could arrive? We simulated the 2025 January transfer window to find out...

Arsenal's 2025 January transfer window simulated

To set up this simulation, we used the Football Manager 2024 editor to give Arsenal a budget of £100million in the 2025 January transfer window, seeing who Arteta would want to add to his squad. This is what happened.

Incomings - £106million (£138m including add-ons)

  • Jhon Duran (Aston Villa) - £49million (rising to £64million with add-ons)

  • Jamie Gittens (Borussia Dortmund) -£57million (rising to £74million with add-ons)

Arsenal's priority in the January transfer window was a striker with the Gunners spending weeks pursuing Newcastle's Alexander Isak, but with the Magpies asking for £100million, Arteta's side walked away. Instead, Arsenal's striker interest remained in the Premier League, with the Gunners signing Aston Villa's Jhon Duran for £49million, potentially rising to £64million with add-ons.

But, the biggest transfer came with two days remaining in the transfer window, with Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens making a move to north London for £57million, potentially rising to a whopping £74million with add-ons. The 20-year-old winger has been fantastic for the German side since leaving Manchester City's academy in 2020.

Outgoings (£17.2million)

  • Kieran Tierney (Aston Villa) - £9million

  • Tommy Setford (Bristol City) - six-month loan

  • Raheem Sterling (Chelsea) - loan terminated

After struggling for game time and failing to impress in the first half of the season, Arsenal and Chelsea mutually agreed to terminate Raheem Sterling's loan, with the Englishman returning to Chelsea before being sent on loan to Atalanta until the end of the season. Kieran Tierney was allowed to leave on a permanent deal after handing in a transfer request, and the Scotsman remained in the Premier League, moving to Aston Villa for £9million.

The only loan departure came on deadline day, with Bristol City taking Tommy Setford on a six-month loan after their first and second-choice goalkeepers both picked up injuries in January.
