With the January transfer window closing in less than a week, Premier League clubs are scrambling to finalise any remaining deals. Manchester City has been the biggest spender, shelling out £150million to support Pep Guardiola's rebuilding efforts, while Marcus Rashford of Manchester United could be the most notable departure as he considers a move to Barcelona.

Chelsea is also contemplating a move for Alejandro Garnacho, and Aston Villa urgently needs a defender. Clubs battling at the bottom of the table might also be enticed into some last-minute transactions.

Meanwhile, league leaders Liverpool and title contenders Arsenal have remained relatively quiet. However, with Profit and Sustainability rules in mind, where does each club stand as the deadline approaches?

Arsenal

By John Cross

It’s hard to see a big signing in this window. They are definitely looking and if there is a loan or a short term deal then maybe. RB Leipzig do not want to sell Benjamin Sesko this month - even though Arsenal are ready to do it. Bournemouth ’s Antoine Semenyo is rapidly moving up the short list of wingers this summer. They are also going all in for Norway wonderkid Sverre Nypan and Martin Zubimendi this summer. Borussia Dortmund want Oleksandr Zinchenko - and Arsenal can spare a left-back.

Aston Villa

By Neil Moxley

Villa are in the busiest spell of their season - and problems at the heart of their defence could not have come at a more difficult time. Diego Carlos completed his £8.5m move to Fenerbache over the weekend. Then, Tyrone Mings suffered a knee injury during the 1-1 draw with West Ham. Pau Torres is weeks away from fitness due to a broken metatarsal. That leaves Ezri Konsa as his only fit and established centre-back.

Emery shifted Lucas Digne inside against the Hammers but needs a plug ’n’ play replacement. Villareal’s Juan Foyth has been suggested - but he’s a right-back and there is a surfeit of them at Villa Park. Sevilla’s Loic Bade has rejected Villa’s approaches but the stakes have been raised. Chelsea's Axel Disasi is an option with talks ongoing.

The message on Jhon Duran has shifted in a subtle way. Ten days ago, Emery said he wanted the young Colombian to stay at Villa for the next decade. Last Friday, ahead of the game with the Hammers, he asked the striker merely to focus on his football. A big, big offer - potentially from the Middle East - could change that.

What won’t change are the problems at the heart of his defence. You can expect that hole to be filled, potentially in the next few days. An experienced defender, even possibly on loan, may be the way Villa go.

Bournemouth

By Ryan Taylor

Bournemouth are open to the idea of landing a striker in the final week of the window following injuries to Evanilson and Enes Unal. They're in the mix for Evan Ferguson (loan) but there is still competition for the Brighton forward. Exits are unlikely this month but defenders Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez are attracting strong interest ahead of the summer transfer window when they could depart.

Brentford

By Ryan Taylor

Brentford were always planning to oversee a quiet January transfer window. Michael Kayode's arrival from Fiorentina means Mads Roerslev could now seal an initial loan switch to Wolfsburg. The Bees have rejected a bid from Nottingham Forest for Yoane Wissa and insist both and Bryan Mbeumo are not for sale, however, Kevin Schade is wanted by Borussia Dortmund and an offer could arrive.

Brighton

By John Cross

The big one is Evan Ferguson. What a prospect. But he needs football and game-time to really push on. West Ham are keen. He has been linked with Arsenal. Brighton are normally so good with their transfer business and will get the right deal for him. Joao Pedro is another who has attracted interest. But hard to see it if they let Ferguson go. They are looking at 18-year-old South Korean winger Do-young Yun.

Chelsea

By Alan Smith

Whispers of a move for Alejandro Garnacho remain but the emphasis is on outgoings. Renato Veiga is edging towards a loan to Juventus while Aston Villa want Axel Disasi. Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei are all tipped to leave - though more likely on temporary deals despite Enzo Maresca considering them surplus to requirements. Christopher Nkunku and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall may also depart should a reasonable bid arrive.

Crystal Palace

By Ryan Taylor

Crystal Palace want to bring in a left-wing back and a centre-back to replace Trevoh Chalobah following his Chelsea recall. Chadi Riad has also suffered a serious knee injury, highlighting a need for defensive reinforcements. Slavia Prague wing-back El Hadji Malick Diouf is their top target and two offers have already been rejected, the highest of which reached £14.3m. Further exits are unlikely as the Eagles want to strengthen, not weaken their squad.

Everton

By Chris McKenna

It was no secret that Everton needed a striker before the transfer window opened but after Saturday, it is an absolute must. Dominic Calvert-Lewin picked up what could be a serious injury while Beto also had a knock in the win over Brighton. Armando Broja is already out until April as well.

But Broja is key to some of the business the Toffees will do this month. Everton would prefer he returned to Chelsea so they can get other domestic loans in. They would take Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall or Carney Chukwuemeka if Chelsea take Broja back.

Fulham

By Alan Smith

Marco Silva has said from the outset that this will be a quiet window at Craven Cottage. They would like to add a right back after Kenny Tete sustained a serious knee injury in December but Silva is happy with his squad and they are already planning for summer business. No one is set to leave either - though left back Antonee Robinson is expected to be hot property in the next window.

Ipswich

By Alan Smith

Jaden Philogene has arrived from Aston Villa for £20m, along with loanees Ben Godfrey and Julio Enciso. But Kieran McKenna remains keen to add firepower to an attack that has placed too heavy a burden on Liam Delap. There remains money to spend this week - though should they fail to survive in the top flight an exodus will be required at Portman Road come the summer.

Leicester

By Neil Moxley

Where to start with the Foxes? So far, they have added Woyo Coulibaly from Parma for £3m. And it sounds as though they had a job convincing the right-back that the King Power Stadium would be a good move.

Key injuries to Wilfred Ndidi and Abdul Fatawu have robbed the Foxes of defensive strength in midfield and pace up front. Boss Ruud van Nistelrooy would love to replace both. Leicester have just cashed in with Tom Cannon leaving for Sheffield United for £13m. That should give them leeway in their constant battle over Profit and Sustainability.

They could do with Odsonne Edouard moving on a permanent basis. The Foxes have not used the Frenchman since loaning him from Crystal Palace. His moving away from the Eagles on a permanent deal would free up a loan spot for Van Nistelrooy. Leicester’s bid to bolster their resources looks set to go to the wire.

Liverpool

By Chris McKenna

Don’t expect any high-profile incomings. Unless someone on their long-term list suddenly becomes available, Liverpool have no plans to make signings in this window. There may be some outgoings on loan with interest in starlets Jayden Danns and James McConnell. Tyler Morton is also wanted by Championship clubs again but there may be Premier League interest before the window closes. Real Madrid are not expected to approach the Reds again about Trent Alexander-Arnold this month.

Manchester City

By Jeremy Cross

Pep Guardiola has done the bulk of his transfer business, in a bid to add some fresh legs and minds to his beleaguered squad. The English champions have blown the thick end of £150million on new signings. Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov will be relied upon to give Guardioa's side fresh impetus, while Christian McFarlane is a young prospect.

And Guardiola's spending might not stop here. He is still in the market for a holding midfielder, with Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich on his shopping list. Heading in the opposite direction is Kyle Walker, who has joined AC Milan on loan for the rest of the season. Inter Miami are keen to sign Kevin De Bruyne, but if a deal takes place it will be in the summer.

Manchester United

By Jeremy Cross

United have found significant business hard to come by, due to the current financial restrictions facing them. Ruben Amorim has wanted to raid former club Sporting for Viktor Gyokeres, but a deal is more likely to happen in the summer. He is also chasing a left wing-back, with PSG's Nuno Mendes and Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu on his radar. But Amorim needs to ship players out before he can bring some in.

United are still working on a deal to let Marcus Rashford join Barcelona on loan, while a bid from Napoli for Alejandro Garnacho has been rejected. Amorim is keen to keep the Argentine, but realises funds need to be raised, and talks with the Italian club are ongoing. Antony has joined Real Betis on loan, while Casemiro could still leave if he agrees a deal with a Saudi club.

Newcastle

By Ryan Taylor

Newcastle are ready to let Miguel Almiron seal his long-awaited return to MLS side Atlanta United. But it's unlikely he'll be replaced as the Magpies remain hamstrung by PSR problems and may struggle to finance incomings.

Defender Lloyd Kelly has attracted interest from Juventus but the Italians are yet to table a suitable offer after Fenerbahce also saw a bid rebuffed. Newcastle were in the hunt for new Man City signing Abdukodir Khusanov but couldn't push through a deal due to PSR.

Nottingham Forest

By Neil Moxley

The word from the City Ground is that the bosses are now hunting quality rather than quantity. In the first few windows, Forest were like kids in a sweet shop - hoovering up goodies as quickly as they could. It brought them problems with Profit and Sustainability - a penalty they paid with hard-won points last season.

It is understood that Forest do have wriggle room within their budgetary constraints to add another face. They are looking towards the top end of the pitch. The water has been tested with Wolves ’ Matheus Cunha.

But City Ground bosses are equally mindful that they have a good group—a solid base of players who are reading from the same hymn sheet. They don’t want to disturb that with a huge influx. A high-class forward is on their wanted list. But they aren’t the only club in the Premier League chasing that.

Southampton

By Darren Wells

Southampton could reluctantly let Kyle Walker-Peters leave this week before his contract expires in the summer. Galatasaray have made an approach while there’s interest from Everton, but Saints will only sell for the right price.

Likewise, Kamaldeen Sulemana will only be allowed to leave on a permanent basis after loan offers were rejected, though injury looks to have scuppered a January deal. Ivan Juric expects Tyler Dibling to stay but the club’s resolve could be tested if they receive a bid close to their £55m valuation of the 18-year-old.

Further incomings are possible but Ollie Tanner looks set to stay at Cardiff City while talks are ongoing for Reading full-back Andre Garcia, 17.

Tottenham

By John Cross

They have done some good January deals in the past (namely Dejan Kulusevski) - and they really need a boost now. But why leave it a month and do last minute dot com signings when Ange Postecoglou needed players at the start of January it makes no sense. They have missed out on Davide Frattesi and Randal Kolo Muani. But really need defensive and midfield reinforcements. If they don’t back Big Ange, it’s unforgivable.

West Ham

By Alan Smith

Graham Potter is in desperate need of a new centre-forward. A bid for Jhon Duran was immediately dismissed by Aston Villa and they have also looked at Ajax’s Brian Brobbey and Leipzig’s Andre Silva. Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton is another option. Chairman David Sullivan is taking a more hands-on approach since replacing Julen Lopetegui with Potter and the future of recruitment chief Tim Steidten is uncertain.

Wolves

By Neil Moxley

Wolves’ hopes of escaping the drop have been given a boost after the club told Matheus Cunha he wouldn’t be leaving during the transfer window. The Brazilian striker has been at the heart of everything good about Wolves and speculation linking him with a move away has been quoshed.

They have already moved into the market with Emmanuel Agbadou, whose strength and determination to defend against Arsenal were welcome qualities in a rearguard that has been breached too often this season. Mario Lemina remains on the outside, looking in, at least until the transfer window is closed. But Wolves don’t need central midfielders, although his return will be welcome for new boss Vitor Pereira.

They do look more solid now that Santiago Bueno has Agbadou on one side and the evergreen Matt Doherty on the other. They need some pace and trickery up front. Expect that to be the focus of their attention over the coming days.
