Fabian Hurzeler "knew" how Manchester United would play and prepared Brighton accordingly, but he believes Ruben Amorim will find a solution to turn around the club's fortunes.

Although it felt like United had turned a corner after strong performances against Liverpool and Arsenal, they took another few steps back against Southampton and Brighton.

Southampton were the better side for most of the game last week and Amad turned the game on its head in the final 10 minutes. United needed to deliver an improved display against Brighton on Sunday afternoon but the Seagulls won 3-1 to extend their superb record at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty to bring the score level after Yankuba Minteh's opener, but Brighton scored twice in the second half through Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter.

Brighton have now won six of their past seven games against United in the Premier League and the result was a brutal reminder of challenge that Amorim has taken on in Manchester.

Hurzeler said: "I'm very happy and proud for the team because they showed commitment this week. They got what they deserved today, they did the details right and the small details to get the result.

"After we scored the opening goal we were a bit passive, we had good structure and were a danger but we changed things for the second half to have more structure in possession.

"To have balance between defensive stability and structure with the ball is very important. The team was mature today. If you only defend here, then you won't be successful.

"It's just the small margins to games. It's a very big club with big tradition and Manchester United was a club I followed through my career but it's important to stay humble and grounded because I also had bad times in my career. Getting consistency in results only comes by working hard."

Asked if he sensed a nervousness in United before the match, Hurzeler said: "I wouldn’t say that.

“They have all individual quality, they are world class players, we as a team came from not a great phase, we had a lot of draws, you have to stay strong, make the self belief, doubts never help and we really tried to focus on ourselves. I am sure Ruben will find a good solution.

"We knew how Manchester United will play and you can prepare for that and we also had this feeling that we are in a good moment, we had the momentum. We came here after two wins, we had a lot of self belief and confidence. It is important to prepare the team but also to focus on yourself."
