Almost 14 years to the day, Liverpool's most memorable transfer deadline day took place with many a record broken. Fernando Torres broke Red hearts when he left for bitter domestic rivals Chelsea for £50million, which set the British transfer record on January 31, 2011.

Kenny Dalglish - who had returned as manager earlier that month - opted to replace Torres with not one, but two strikers.

Liverpool would pay a club record fee of £35million for Andy Carroll, but sadly it would not work out. Just 11 goals in 58 appearances across the course of 18 months was not the return the club hoped for on their investment.

What is forgotten when people call Carroll 'a flop' is Liverpool signed Luis Suarez in that winter transfer window, too.

At £22.8million, the Uruguayan centre-forward would go on to be one of the best value transfers in history.

Suarez nearly single-handedly dragged Liverpool to their first title in 25 years in 2013-14 when he scored 31 Premier League goals.

During the January transfer window of that season, the Reds attempted to sign Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka for £20m from Dnipro of the same country.

Despite Liverpool's medical team spending the week in Ukraine, the Dnipro president Ihor Kolomoyskyi refused to sanction the transfer.

As the clock struck 11pm, the Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was unsuccessful in pursuit of his man, but it is questionable what bearing Konoplyanka's arrival would have had.

The Reds were strong in the attacking department with the SAS partnership of Suarez and Daniel Sturridge perfectly complemented by Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho.

To the frustration of some fans, it does not appear as if Liverpool will complete a transfer deadline day deal today.

But the Reds sit pretty, six points clear with a game in hand at the top of the Premier League table with just 15 matches remaining.

And Arne Slot nearly has a clean bill of health from which to select except for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who recently sustained an apparent thigh issue.
