'A project I couldn't turn down': Former Reading forward on big-money Wrexham move
Former Reading forward Sam Smith explained that the move to Wrexham, which was completed on Friday, was one he 'could not turn down' in an emotional goodbye message to supporters.
An Academy graduate who scored twice in 11 appearances during his first spell, the 26-year-old returned in the summer of 2023 after impressing with Cambridge United.
Scoring 27 times in 63 appearances over the last 18 months, the North-West native made a £2m move to the Red Dragons, who sit third in League One and are owned by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds.
Issuing a statement on his social media channels wishing the club and supporters well, the striker said: "It's been a tough decision but a project I couldn't turn down and an opportunity to move back home closer to my family."

Speaking more broadly on his time with the club, the statement read: "I didn't think I'd be writing this, but it is time to say goodbye for a second time, Royals.
"I can wholeheartedly say I gave everything and it was an honour to be able to return and live out my teenage ambition of scoring goals and leading the line for this football club.

"We had some amazing memories in difficult circumstances and I hope everything off the field can be resolved in the near future as it's what everyone associated with the club deserves.
"To those I've shared the pitch with, thank you. I've made friends for life and played with some amazing people. To the fans, thank you for your support. From the Academy days to my return and to now, you've been there throughout it all. See you soon."
Wrexham, managed by club legend Phil Parkinson, make the trip to the SCL Stadium in March.
