Raheem Sterling backs Manchester City team-mate Phil Foden to earn England call-up after Champions League strike
Raheem Sterling threw his weight behind an England senior team call-up for Phil Foden after the Manchester City youngster netted in the 2-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb.
Foden has found chances limited this season and his only Premier League appearance came at the end of the opening day victory over West Ham United.
But he was introduced in stoppage-time against Zagreb and while his team-mates passed up numerous opportunities on the night, he needed just one chance to find the back of the net.
“I am buzzing for Phil [Foden] and I want him in the national team, if he keeps going he will be there,” Sterling said.
The England international was the other bright spot for City, as he came off the bench to open the scoring before setting up Foden.
"We have seen them play with the clips that the manager showed and it was difficult to break them down at times,” he added.
“A few did not go in but we took our chance and then got the second.
"It is always disappointing not to start but we had to be patient. I was happy to contribute to the team. Players that we have here, you have to read the game and the goals will come.”
Foden, meanwhile, was happy to preach patience despite his lack of minutes for the Premier League champions, although he was clearly delighted to round off the victory for City.
"It is all about enjoying your time on the pitch and I am happy to score and help the team,” he explained.
"I thought they were putting dangerous balls in the box so to seal the win meant everything.
"You have to show the manager what you can do each day in training, every young kid wants to play but you have to keep patient."
