Manchester United will be keen on strengthening now the January transfer window is open - if they have the funds to do so.

The Reds have endured a miserable season so far, with Ruben Amorim unable to improve United's fortunes since Erik ten Hag's sacking in October. United currently sit 14th in the Premier League table with nervous murmurings of a relegation battle as they remain seven points above the bottom three.

United's woes could continue on Sunday when they travel to arch rivals and league leaders Liverpool (kick-off at 4.30pm). Arne Slot's team have lost just once all season in a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest back in September.

Ferdinand backs Rangnick call

Rio Ferdinand has admitted previous comments from former United interim boss Ralf Rangnick have come true amid the Reds' struggles this season.

"Ralf Rangnick said this needs open heart surgery, not a quick fix. He weren't wrong," Ferdinand said on his podcast.

"How true are those words ringing now? He was vilified and ridiculed when he said those words. He was so right. And I think Amorim would sit there behind closed doors and would be thinking the same thing."

MEN Sport's Isaac Seelochan says: "It is the fault of the Glazers and Ineos' muddled start that the Rangnick's assessment was never enacted at Old Trafford. A third-place finish in Ten Hag's first season also perhaps persuaded the club's hierarchy that major changes were not needed.

"But the current state of the club shows Rangnick was right - and that open-heart surgery is indeed still needed."

Zirkzee exit claim made

Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly attracting interest from Juventus and Napoli. The Daily Mail has claimed that both clubs are manoeuvring themselves into a position to sign the Dutchman should he leave Old Trafford.

However, it is said that he is prepared to fight for his future for the Reds. Both Juve and Napoli are said to have been interested last summer before he moved to M16.

MEN Sport's Isaac Seelochan says: "I feel sorry for Zikzee, but it's hard to imagine him starting for any top Premier League team. It reminds me of when Liverpool signed Andy Carroll. He's just not the right fit and a move away would be best for both parties."
