Rangers ramp up Lyall Cameron transfer chase as Philippe Clement eyes a bargain in Connor Barron repeat
Rangers are considering an out-of-contract move for Dundee’s Lyall Cameron.
The Light Blues have ramped up their interest in the Scotland Under-21 star in recent weeks. Their scouting team have done extensive work and are continuing to watch the midfielder, who is out of contract at Dens Park in the summer. Dundee have offered the 22-year-old a new deal and remain in talks over an extension, but there is growing interest in Cameron and Rangers are on the case.
They could make a similar move to last summer when they moved to land Connor Barron on freedom of contract from Aberdeen. A tribunal ordered Rangers to pay the Dons around £650,000 for the midfielder, with a possible further payment of £250,000 and a 10 per cent sell-on.
Rangers know they could get Cameron for a similar sort of fee. Dundee would only get training compensation if their academy graduate was to move outside Scotland at the end of the season.
Rangers are looking to try and snap up some of the best young Scottish talent for the short and long-term. The Light Blues also knows it is important for European competition and the homegrown rule. Cameron missed Dundee’s 1-1 with Rangers on Thursday night through illness.
Meanwhile, Rangers are looking to bring in a central defender this month, to replace Neraysho Kasanwirjo who has been ruled out for the majority of the season and is set to be recalled from his loan by Feyenoord. The Ibrox side could do more business if they were able to sell or move on some of their existing squad.
Striker Cyriel Dessers is attracting interest from Major League Soccer. Atlanta United were interested in the last window and are among a number of teams who are keeping tabs.
He has also been linked with Italian side Cagliari and French side St Etienne in recent weeks. Rangers are unlikely to stand in the Nigerian international’s way if the right offer is tabled and are in early talks with a number of suitors. But Dessers could be joined by others out the door as under pressure Philippe Clement tries to rebuild his squad and lower the wage bill.
