Diogo Jota will be out for "weeks" with a muscle injury after a goalscoring cameo against Nottingham Forest - and Liverpool Echo readers in our comments section say that this is the perfect time for Liverpool to start being more aggressive in the transfer window, with a highly-rated young winger on the radar.

Jota will likely be absent for the Reds' first Champions League game of the year against Lille on Tuesday night, picking up a muscle injury not long after returning to action from another injury in October. Arne Slot confirmed that he expected Jota to return in "weeks not months", adding: "I've said many times before that the last stage of rehab is the most difficult one, or the one that can sometimes add a few days or not. Diogo overloaded a certain muscle a bit."

Liverpool have made no major moves in the January transfer window so far, but have the opportunity for an "absolute bargain" in the form of financially-troubled French club Lyon's Rayan Cherki. Reportedly available for under £20 million, Liverpool would face competition for the young French star's signature from top European and Premier League clubs.

Some fans say that this is the time to start planning for the future of Liverpool's forward line. Commenter Aldonumber8 says: “Be a nice time to buy Cherki. At the money Lyon will accept we'll well be able to move him on if it doesn't work out without a loss, and if it does work out he's a steal, particularly if Salah & Diaz are having itchy feet.”

CanuckfromBootle writes: “Very much agree. Only show reels I know, but his skills are off the charts. Less than 20m they reckon - plays right wing too - has TWO good feet and he goes past players. Offer Mo a contract by all means but don't break the bank. FSG could find Cherki's fee down the back of the couch - a no brainer TBH. And they do like their Moneyball bargains - surely this has to be one of them, especially with Jota out again.”

Reader Sifellows1968 says: “Jota really struggles with injuries, it’s a shame that he cannot get a good run. Big miss at this stage of the season. I see Slot making some moves in the summer regardless of where we finish as he’ll want his own team moving forward.”

Mark6576 agrees: “Injured too often, time to go and either bring someone in or promote Danns.”

Arthurpint is frustrated by Jota's rotten luck: “As a result of a conveyor belt of 'niggling injuries', former striker Daniel Sturridge only appeared in about one third of 'ALL' the fixtures he could have played in during his time at LFC. Now it seems that Jota is 'going' the same way! Whilst Jota is a fantastic finisher, and all round striker, right now I can't see how LFC can justify keeping him, especially as he appears to have no more resilience than a thin piece of balsa wood.”

Wudwudley adds: “We need players we can rely to be on the pitch regularly, Jota can't score goals from the treatment room.”
